Mann the Artist and Businessman • He now spends roughly a third of his time on business management and a third of his time of marketing and a third on design and creation. • “I make decisions that are based on making investments in risky artistic undertakings, not the bottom-line results.” • He registered the trademark, “Techno-Romantic”
Thomas Mann • In 1980 he launched what he would come to call Techno Romantic jewelry. It is whimsical, pairing sentimental shapes (hearts, hands) and images (mostly sepia photographs) with the harder, industrial look of parts, perforated metal panels, and electrical components.
Techno-Romantic • His jewelry includes a mix of metals and other materials including acrylics, gemstones, enamels and found objects. • Collage and assemblage are major themes throughout his work. Thomas shares the steps of creating these one-of-a-kind objects. He begins a broach with a precious metal base such as sterling silver or bronze. He then adds traditional and/or romantic elements to the piece. Once complete, he continues in the style he's known for--adding pieces of enamel or other found objects with a sociological reference.
THOMAS ROBERT MANN • Instead of creating new work that can translate into Techno-Romantic, he has 3 new systems operating at the moment. To differentiate them from his best-known work, they are marketed under Thomas Robert Mann. • Biggest change is departure from representational imagery. • His work is now totally abstract.
