  1. Good Teeth Are Essential for So Many Reasons Right from a very young age children are taught their teeth are important, as important as all of their senses such as being able to see and to hear, as important for their general well-being as any other ability or capability they may possess. We all know that without teeth our health would start to suffer. Good teeth are essential for a great number of reasons, not least of all to ensure food is chewed properly to ensure that important processes that aid digestion start at the best place: in the mouth, with the teeth. Good chewing is at the heart of digestion and further processes that all impact health and related issues. It helps with other issues too, such as self-confidence: a great smile is certainly a good start for people to feel good about them and to understand how others view them. The same is true for a smile that shows unattractive, crooked – even missing – teeth. Teeth are as important to our appearance as a good skin or other attributes. So the family dentist becomes a “friend” from early on as visits are scheduled to pick up any problems early enough, before they may lead to serious issues. The oral hygienist at the dentist helps you by cleaning out those areas that you do not reach or pay attention to, they make sure plaque and tartar are seen to, they also teach the little ones – and their parents – about good oral hygiene. The dentist will look for any and all issues that could lead to serious issues and make sure these are addressed early on. That is why millions of people worldwide have fillings, or why many receive root canal treatments from endodontists, or why teenagers get teeth alignment treatment, why every patient is offered great services to ensure their teeth look good and are strong enough to fulfill their function. Getting to know the best dentists and dental care specialists in your village or town, or the suburb in your city is therefore important. From early on kids are taught the importance of these professionals in their life, and if he/she turns out to be a great dentist or specialist it may mean a lifelong association for many, just as is the case with doctors and their patients. Different dentists may offer different dental care even if they all are dentists with good training at university and specialist colleges. The general dentist is the one that most people

There are, however, those that work in a specific area or discipline such as, say, endodontics or periodontics, for example. All are dentists even if they perform a specialist function. It often starts with the general or family dentist that may then refer the patient to another professional – often in the same practice. For example, some patients are in need of dental implants. This is necessitated when you have lost a tooth, or when one (or more) of your teeth have been extracted by a dentist for whatever specific reason. The implant is, therefore, an artificial tooth root that is literally implanted into your jaw to then hold a replacement tooth or bridge that is placed on top. A good implant is very often the solution since it can last for many years and offer you the base for your new, or artificial, tooth to perform a normal function. The implant is done by surgical procedure and most often performed by a periodontist or other dental specialist. The procedure is often done under local anaesthesia and causes only minimal discomfort for the patient, although individual circumstances may vary: a good, experienced dentist or periodontist will know and offer the best advice. Periodontics is but one area of dental care; of course a good practice will offer all related services, or know who to send the patient to for the treatment they may want to recommend.
