  1. Very Few People Will Go Through Life without Tooth Fillings Already at a young age children get to know the dentist, as these visits are important throughout our lives to ensure our teeth remain in good condition well into the senior years. Those first, or early visits, are important to start a lifelong process of making sure we schedule regular visits to the family dentist from a young age, even when there is nothing wrong with the teeth. It is part of a healthy routine that should be repeated regularly, at least once a year, but preferably every six months for the best results. When we visit regularly, the dentist can pick up any signs of tooth decay early enough to recommend – and perform – the best treatment. Most people will, at some stage of their lives, need to have fillings done. Most fillings are done either because a patient complains of discomfort when they eat or drink, or they chip one or more of their teeth – or the teeth simply decay to a point that necessitates a filling. In many cases, this may be the only treatment the patient needs, but at the same time, it gives the dentist the opportunity to check for other – even more serious – issues to be sure that a patient does not suffer future problems. Tooth fillings are done by all dentists, and most patients simply visit the family dentist to take care of these, as a tooth filling could be categorised under those dental services that are termed general. It is not a specialized field such as, say, periodontics or orthodontics which are specialist fields and taken care of by a specialist dentist, a dentist that offers further education and study. The family dentist is the one that checks for general issues that affect us all, such as signs of tooth decay, chipped teeth, the gums, and the general areas in the mouth relating to the first signs of dental problems. The periodontist, for example, offers specialized knowledge treating the gums and bone structures that support the teeth, just as the orthodontist specializes in the field of the position of the teeth and jaws, for example.

  2. Should the dentist detect any tooth that needs a filling, he/she will obviously tell the patient and then very often go ahead and do it right there and then during the visit. Most dentists have a dental assistant to help them, even though many dentists do not need this person to be there when a normal filling is done. It is the dentist and patient. Depending on the patient’s ability to handle discomfort during procedures, the dentist may offer a local anesthetic, or it may be done without – depending on the patient, and the dentist’s advice and experience. Fillings are done to offer protection against future decay, and some fillings last for many years. But, during all follow-up visits, the dentist will check every old filling to be sure these are still good and offer protection from further possible decay. If it is time to remove an old filling and replace it with a newer one, the dentist will tell the patient and go ahead. It is also mentioned that there are different fillings that dentists can use, for example, the silver or amalgam filling, and the composite or the so-called “white” filling. These composite fillings are made from a composite or glass ionomer and are, at times, used to replace the amalgam fillings you may have, also because these days people are more aware of the importance of the appearance of their teeth and smile – hence the white filling as opposed to the amalgam option. Also, the white fillings are reported to offer better long-term protection from fractures and tooth sensitivity than the amalgam filling. Therefore more and more people these days ask for the composite filling – and also have their amalgams replaced with these.
