  1. Automaticity Theory/Model of Reading EDC565 Group Presentations - NAME: Lee Ann Hooper and Karen Recene

  2. Principles of _____ Model of Reading • The LaBerge-Samuels(1974) model of automatic information processing in reading. • Model used the concept or automaticity to explain why fluent readers are able to decode and beginning readers have difficulty. • The main principle of the model is attention. Attention has two components: • External-Using sentences to maximize information. • Internal- Being able to choose our focus on a particular subject.(Cocktail Party Phenomena) • Reading is… being able to decode text in order to focus ones attention to comprehension.

  3. Aligning AutomaticityModels of Reading With Historical Eras • Best fits in Information Processing Era (1976-1985) • Roots in cognitive psychology and information-processing of the mind. • Links between schema and memory theory. • Key role of comprehension. • Text-based learning was about knowledge, which was organized and stored within the individual mind, and resulted from the input, interpretation, organization, retention, and output of information.

  4. Conditions that prompted Automaticity Models of Reading • Most widely used good theoretical model • 3 characteristics- summarizes, explains, and predicts. • Conditions included growing attention to the structure and processes of the human mind. • Increased U.S. federal funding for basic reading research.

  5. Leading Researchers of Automaticity Research in Reading • LaBerge-Samuels- • Anderson, John R. (1982)- Acquisition of Cognitive Skill. • Three stages: • “Declarative knowledge” phase • “Compilation” phase • “Procedural knowledge” phase • Logan G. (1988) and Stanovich K. (1990) • Automaticity is a memory phenomenon.

  6. How does an Automaticity model inform research in reading? • Research Questions- • “Barking at Print” • Cannot remember what they have read • Methodologies- Measure automatic information processing and linking to comprehension. • Instructional Recommendations: • Repeated Readings • Is it memory or is it attention
