Why football, and why a “Red Card”? • International football competitions are mobilizing events, covered by a dense network of media and followed by a huge public. • Foul play; actions that are dangerous to players and penalizing to their team are sanctioned with a “Red Card”.
The first Red Card Campaign was launched in 2002 in partnership with FIFA and CAF, at the ACN (Mali). • In 2002, CAF signed a MOU with ILO on child labour. • In 2003, FIFA and ILO issued a joint media release, expressing their will to unite efforts to fight child labour. • Other Red Card Campaigns have been organized in national and international football competitions worldwide.
Numerous world leaders and celebrities from sports and the arts are actively supporting the campaign, among others holding publicly the Red Card. Why Egypt? • Egypt is hosting the ACN 2006 • 3 million working children (1/6 of all workers) • First survey on child labour soon published • First national strategy for child labour soon announced
The Red Card Campaign at the ACN 2006 (Egypt) is organized by ILO in partnership with Egypt’s National Council for Childhood and Motherhood. • It is launched under the auspices of Egypt’s First Lady, Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak. • It has achieved broad ILO support (IPEC, DCOMM, RO Africa, and SRO Yaoundé).
In Egypt too the Campaign is receiving wide support. H.E Aisha Abdel Hady Minister of Manpower, Egypt. Mr. Ahmed Ezz, Actor, Egypt. Sheikh Said Mahmoud, Egypt.

Campaign Activities in Stadiums
Electronic displays • Public announcements • Playing of the Campaign song and video • Children wearing T-shirts and caps with red card logos
Out of Stadiums Activities • Airing of a video spot in Cairo’s public transportation and on national and international TV • Airing of the song Red Card by radio stations • Display of posters in key locations • Interviews with national and international media • Mobilization initiatives in communities
Broad NGO Involvement • 12national and international NGOs (AFICs, Caritas, CEOSS, ETUF, FEDA, Football Clubs, SFD, Scouts, Sekem, NGO Support Centre, Red Crescent, Terre des Hommes) • Activities: discussion groups, children poetry, drawings, slogan-writing contests, football tournaments, etc.) • Winners receive prizes with Red Card logos
Follow Up Activities • Ongoing forum on Child Labour • Support to national strategy (income generating alternatives for parents;/ apprenticeships, for ex., as alternatives for children; positive labour inspection, etc.) • Dissemination of best practices in the fight to child labour
