THE SILVER SURFER AND FREE WILL “I am not the Destroyer,” the Silver Surfer tells Sue Storm. He explains to her what compels his mission: the need to protect “the one that I love” from the evil Galactus. And the good news is that can serve whom ever he chooses. So, what will he choose: Freedom from evil or continued Slavery to it? Spiritual Connections Sue Storm tells him that he has a choice. Myths that people believe: 1. People often blame the devil for all the evil in the world. 2. They give Satan as much power as they give God. 3. They view Satan as all-powerful, all-knowing and all-present. 4. They think Satan is in charge of hell. Cultural Connection None of these are in the Bible
The Bible teaches: 1. People are to blame for the evil in the world. Satan cheers them on. 2. Satan is a fallen angel. He has limited power. He is not almighty. 3. God is in charge of hell -not Satan. 4. Satan’s power is found in willful people who follow rebel against God. 5. Like the Silver Surfer, we choose who we will serve. Cultural Connection Satan is a defeated foe
TODAY WE VIEW SATAN THROUGH THE BOOK OF REVELATION Remember this promise: How blessed the reader! How blessed the hearers and keepers of these oracle words, all the words written in this book! -- Revelation 1:3 A Book of Hope
Revelation 12:10-12 (The Living Translation) Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens, "It has happened at last—the salvation and power and kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Christ! For the Accuser has been thrown down to earth—the one who accused our brothers and sisters before our God day and night. [11] And they have defeated him because of the blood of the Lamb and because of their testimony. And they were not afraid to die. [12] Rejoice, O heavens! And you who live in the heavens, rejoice! But terror will come on the earth and the sea. For the Devil has come down to you in great anger, and he knows that he has little time."
Revelation 20:10 (The Living Translation) Then the Devil, who betrayed them, was thrown into the lake of fire that burns with sulfur, joining the beast and the false prophet. There they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.
● While the Devil is real and powerful, I have more than enough resources to live in victory over him. ● I’ll not make the mistake of underestimating the Devil. After all, he is wily and sly. He is bent on my destruction. ● Because he is a master at deception, accusation and outrageous lies. I’ll need to keep walking each day with Jesus. ● I’ll need to tell Satan to Shut Up when he tries to flatter, accuse or do his sweet talking. In Christ I have the authority over all the power of the enemy. Starting Points
God, you alone are my salvation. Only with your help can I whip the Devil. I’ll stay in your Word, walk by your side. I thank you for the life victorious you have given me in Christ. Commitment

● Name was Lucifer*--Isaiah 14:12 ● The highest of the archangels --Ezekiel 28:12 ● Cast from heaven because of pride --Isaiah 14:13-15 • * ‘Lucifer’ is a Latin word meaning "light-bearer”; a direct translation of the Septuagint Greek used in Jesus’ day. SATAN’S ORIGIN
Isaiah 14:12 -15 (KJV) How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!* how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. 15 Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit. * Text prefers to the king of Babylonia (Lucifer or Light-Bearer), allegorically traditional Christian theologians also find (double) reference to Satan’s Fall. SATAN’S ORIGIN
SATAN’S ORIGIN Ezekiel 28: 13, 15, 17 (KJV) 13 You lived in the Garden of Eden … 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. 17Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee. * Text prefers to the King of Tyre, allegorically traditional Christian theologians find (double) reference to Satan’s Fall.
A challenge to God’s word: “Has God really said you shall not eat of the tree?” HIS FIRST RECORDED WORDS
HIS CONSISTENT TEMPTATION STRATEGY Tempting Eve through Human Weakness (Genesis 3) ● Lust of the Flesh -- Eve saw the fruit was good for food ● Lust of the Eyes -- Fruit was ‘Pleasant to the Eyes’ ● Foolish Pride of Life -- Fruit was desirable for gaining wisdom
HIS CONSISTENT TEMPTATION STRATEGY Tempting Jesus through Human Weakness (Matthew 4) ● Turn this rock to bread. ● Have dominion over all the kingdoms of the world. ● Throw yourself down from this pinnacle and the Angels will catch you. (Unlike the first humans, Jesus resisted each temptation)
THE BIBLE DECLARES THAT SATAN IS VULNERABLE ● Armor is available for our battle with him. --Ephesians 6:10-18 ● Submit to God and Resist the devil and he will flee. --James 4.7 ● He is doomed! (Re-read today’s scripture.)
The Accuser …hurled down --12.10 ● Overcome by the blood of the Lamb --12.11 ● His time is short --12.12 ● An angel seized the ancient serpent and threw him into the abyss --20.3 ● The devil thrown into a lake of burning sulfur --20.10 ● Beast and false prophet doomed day and night age-lastingly--20.10 ● If anyone’s name is not found in book of life…thrown into lake of fire (with Satan) --20.15 REVELATION DESCRIBES HIS PROWESS, YET ULTIMATE AND UTTER UNDOING
CONCLUSION OF THE MATTER ● The Devil was not created evil. ● His pride and jealous heart resulted in him being cast from heaven. ● He wages war against God and Kingdom people. ● We have the Holy Spirit, The Word of God and trusted promises to keep us strong against him. ● He is doomed. So we must take heart, keep on track and expect to battle until God sends him to the bottomless pit.
● I have more than enough resources to defeat Satan. I can and will live victorious. ● I’ll not make the mistake of underestimating the Devil. He is bent on my destruction. Nor will I underestimate my power as a child of God ● Even though he is a master at deception, “I will fear no evil” because I walk each day with Jesus. ● Satan is subject to me. I speak, he listens. “Be gone” and he goes. I will not turn this around and be subject of his sweet talking. Victory Declarations
