  1. Top 5 NGOs supporting heart surgeries in India Interventions for heart defects are usually expensive. This is due to the sophisticated techniques and procedures involved in the treatment. When it comes to congenital heart defects, the high cost of the treatment prevents many lesser privileged children in getting access to timely treatment. Congenital heart defects are defects in the structure of the heart that the child is born with. The treatment for the defect depends on the type and severity of the defect. In the case of mild defects, no intervention maybe needed but, in the case, of moderate and severe defects an intervention is essential to make sure that the child develops well. In most cases, children born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) can grow upto live near normal lives, timely diagnosis and treatment being the key. Awareness about congenital heart defects tends to remain low leading to a delayed diagnosis. Some NGOs are doing a lot of work to build this awareness. Genesis Foundation, an NGO in Haryana, undertakes many activities across the country to build awareness about CHD in addition to supporting the treatment of lesser privileged children born with a CHD.

  2. Free Heart Surgery for Poor in India In most cases as mentioned above heart surgeries are expensive. There are a few facilities that support free heart surgery for poor in India. This includes Government support, help from charitable hospitals, trusts and some NGOs. NGOs have been playing a big role in supporting the heart treatment of underprivileged persons, especially when it comes to congenital heart defects. The top 5 NGOs supporting heart surgeries in India are: 1) Genesis Foundation: an NGO in Haryana, Genesis Foundation supports the medical treatment of underprivileged children born with a congenital heart defect in the age group of 0- 18 years. The Foundation has a network of 40 partner hospitals located across the country that provides the treatment. The Foundation has also been conducting screening camps with support from the partner hospitals taking congenital heart defect diagnosis and treatment to areas which have limited access to specialised medical care. 2) Child Heart Foundation: This Foundation also supports the free heart surgery for poor in India. They undertake free/discounted echocardiograms to diagnose a CHD in lesser privileged families. They also train personnel for screening of heart defects. 3) Heart For Hearts: identifies children in need of a heart surgery through referrals, camps or directly. Identified children with one parents/caregiver are then transported to an NGO in Chennai where the interventions are undertaken.

  3. 4) Fortis Foundation:Fortis Foundation’s “Save a Heart” supports pediatric cardiac surgeries for underprivileged children in the country. They also conduct screening camps in remote areas to screen for children who could have a CHD. They work closely with doctors, other NGOs and corporations to mobilise resources towards this cause. 5) Needy Heart Foundation: is another NGO that has been set up to support lesser privileged patients with cardiac surgeries. The Foundation supports patients from in and around Karnataka and is managed by some doctors and a few like minded citizens. In addition to the above-mentioned NGOs there are also some hospitals and trusts that provide free heart surgery for poor in India. Shri Satya Sai Sanjeevani Hospitals, for example, has been set up to provide free heart surgeries for the poor in India. The hospital treats patients not only from the remote parts of the country but also from neighbouring counties like Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Their center at Palwal has India’s first genomics lab dedicated to Congenital Heart diseases, looking at researching the disease pattern and identifying possible causes to step up preventive efforts. In addition to these centres the Government of India launched the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram. The program involves screening of children from 0-18 years for 4 defects – defects at birth, deficiencies, development delays and diseases. Children diagnosed with any of the conditions mentioned above can avail of free health services in state empanelled hospitals. Conclusion There is a huge need to support children born with a congenital heart defect. These are one of the most common birth defects and the treatment continues to remain expensive. Inspite of the increased support that has been made available to help lesser privileged families, there continues to remain a huge need to help many such children. Many children in the country continue to lose their lives or face long term complications due to a lack of resources and awareness. This needs to change, as most children are able to live near normal lives, timely diagnosis and treatment being key.
