Dams are the perfect examples of architectural and civil engineering marvels. Tough, strong, and extremely durable, they comprise colossal concrete walls and unpenetrable structures. Generating huge amounts of hydroelectricity, dams are inevitable for irrigation, industrial usage, and domestic purposes.

1. Tehri Dam. Location:- Uttarakhand, and it is locatedon Bhagirathi River. Height:- 261 meters Length:- 575 meters The dam creates a reservoir of 2.6 cubic kilometres (2,100,000 acre sq ft) with a surface area of 52 square kilometres (20 sq mt)The installed hydro capacity is 1,000 MW along with an additional 1,000 MW of pumped storage hydroelectricity. The Tehri Dam and the Tehri Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Plant are part of the Tehri Dam Hydro power Complex which also includes the 400 MW Koteshwar Dam.

3. Sardar Sarovar Dam Location:-Gujarat, and it is constructedon Narmada River. Height:- 163 meters Length:- 1210 meters The Narmada Dam or Sardar Sarovar Dam, as known locally, is a gravity dam built across the Narmada river near Navagam in Gujarat. The dam is a part of the Narmada Valley Project, a large hydraulic engineering project involving the construction of a series of large irrigation and hydroelectric multi-purpose dams over the Narmada River. The project took form in 1979 as part of a development scheme to increase irrigation and produce hydroelectricity.
4. Hirakud Dam Location:-Odisha, and it is constructedon Mahanadi River. Height:- 61 meters Length:- 26 km. Often treated as one of the perfect day-out spots in Sambalpur, Odisha, Hirakud is historical dam constructed across the River Mahanadi. Of all dams, Hirakud is the longest dam in India. 5. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam Location:-Telangana,and it is constructedon Krishna River. Height:- 124 meters Length:- 1.6 km. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam is located in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh. The dam is constructed in the midst of such mesmerizing panoramic views and lush green surrounding which captivates the mind of the people with such serenity. The dam is built over the River Krishna and is considered to be the landmark spot in the district of Nalgonda.
6. Koyna Dam Location:-Maharashtra, and it is constructedon Koyna River. Height:- 61 meters Length:- 26 km. The development of this dam was finished in 1963 and is among the boss structural designing undertakings worked after the freedom of India. The catchment region of the Koyna Dam obstructs Koyna River and makes the Shivsagar Lake, which is about 50 km long. The spillway of the dam is situated at the middle and it has 6 outspread doors. The dam assumes a fundamental part of surge controlling in rainstorm season.
7. Indira Sagar Dam Location:-Madhya Pradesh, and it is constructedon Narmada River. Height:- 92 meters Length:- 653 meters Indira Sagar Dam is Asia’s most prestigious hydro power project. This multipurpose dam is built over the river Narmada in Khandwa at Narmadanagar. The foundation stone of this dam was laid by the former PM, Mrs. Indira Gandhi on 23 October 1984.
8. Rihand Dam Location:-Uttar Pradesh Height:- 92 meters Length:- 934 meters This is the largest multi-purpose project of Uttar Pradesh. It involves the construction of a 934 m long and 91 m high (from stream bed 167 m) straight gravity concrete dam across the river Rihand (a Tributary of the Son river) near village Pipri in Sonbhadra district.The water so impounded is col lected in Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar reservoir which spreads over an area of 130 sq. km. (466 sq. km when full) and collects 10,608 m cu m of water.
9. Mettur Dam Location:-Tamil Nadu, and it is constructedon Cauvery River. Height:- 120 feet Length:- 1700 meters Mettur means “town with crests and troughs”. The name is due to the rocky and undulating surface structure. The Mettur dam has a total length of 1700 meters. It provides the town with irrigation facilities and generates hydro-electric power. It was constructed in the year 1934. The Stanley Reservoir behind the dam is a popular tourist attraction. Surrounded by hills, it offers a spectacular view. Upstream from the dam is Hogenakkal Falls.
10. Krishna Sagar Dam Location:-Karnataka, and it is constructedon Cauvery River. Height:- 130 feet Length:- 8600 feet The Krishna Raja Sagara Dam (KRS Dam) was built across river Kaveri, the life giving river for the Mysore and Mandya districts, in 1924. Apart from being the main source of water for irrigation in the most fertile Mysore and Mandya, the reservoir is the main source of drinking water for all of Mysore city and almost the whole of Bangalore city, the capital of the state of Karnataka.
