Over the years the Japanese calligraphy has grown leading to the development of various styles. There are three styles which form the base, and they include; ‘correct writing way’ (kaisho), ‘the traveling writing’ (gyousho) and the ‘grass writing’ (sousho). Calligraphy has become a compulsory subject in elementary school and an art subject in high school.
Four main tools used for calligraphy. The ink stick (sumi), it is mainly made from treated handmade material (soot, glue) that is combined with water and ground on an ink stone (suzuri), to produce a luminous black ink.
