Kanipakam Temple Timings At the bank of the river Bahuda in the state of Andhra Pradesh, lays a small village called Kanipakam. “kani” means wetland and “pakam” which means the flow of water into the wetland. Made in the early 11th century by the king Kulothunga Chola I, this temple was constructed and later developed in 1336 by the Emperors of Vijayanagara dynasty. It is a Lord Ganesha temple which has a unique history and significance and the Kanipakam Temple Timings are also worldly known. HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE According to legend, there were 3 brothers each of whom was handicap i.e. Dumb, Deaf and Blind. They had a small piece of land in which they used to cultivate and earn from it. In the earlier days, water was drawn from the well by way of the “Piccota System”. Once, they found that the water from the well had dried up and they could not irrigate their land. One of the brothers started digging up the well deeper in such of water and found that his tool was hitting some stone like formation. Soon, it started oozing blood and the well filled up with blood. Not only did this miracle happen but it also healed the 3 brothers. The villagers dried to dig the well further but they couldn’t do so because the idol of Lord Vinayaka known as “Swayambhu” idol emerged from the waters. Then the villagers offered the coconuts to the idol and the theertham(holy water) covered the entire area and hence the name of the temple was called as “kanipakam”. If rumours were to be believed, the idol is still growing in size and for now, the knees and abdomen of the idol is seen. The water overflows from the well especially in monsoons and it is served as tirtham (holy water) to the devotees.
