  1. What is Tooth Filling? A filling is a procedure for restoring a tooth's normal function and shape following decay. When a dentist places a filling, they first remove the decayed tooth material, then cleans the affected area, and finally fills the hole with a filling material. By blocking the entry points for bacteria, a filling helps prevent further decay. Gold, porcelain, composite resin (tooth-colored fillings), and amalgam are utilized for fillings. Dental hygiene should begin as soon as a baby's teeth appear, and teaching oral hygiene should begin at a young age. Despite one’s best efforts to promote proper oral care, children might develop cavities or holes. Teeth decay is only one of the reasons one requires fillings. A filling is also required if the tooth has been traumatized, resulting in a crack. Additional concerns include improperly shaped teeth, undeveloped teeth, and chipped teeth. Dentists frequently use crowns instead of fillings on both front and back teeth in these cases, as the crown can give a more thorough restoration to the damaged or malformed tooth than a filling could. 2. What causes holes in teeth? ● When germs that cause decomposition come into contact with sugars and starches found in meals and beverages, an acid is formed. This acid can affect the surface of the tooth (enamel), causing mineral loss. When a tooth is continuously exposed to acid, such as when you consume sugary or starchy foods or drinks, the enamel continues to erode. If minerals have been lost, a white patch may form. This is an indication of early deterioration. At this time, tooth decay can be slowed or reversed. Enamel may heal itself by utilizing minerals from saliva and fluoride from toothpaste or by having a dentist or dental hygienist apply fluoride. If more minerals are lost than can be replaced, the enamel weakens and finally breaks down, resulting in the formation of a hole. Very serious decay might result in a huge hole or possibly the complete destruction of the tooth. If untreated, dental decay can lead to discomfort, infection, and even tooth loss. ● ● ● What are the treatments for managing these holes in teeth? Although it is preferable to avoid cavities, they can be repaired. Filling materials used to heal cavities include tooth-colored (composite) fillings and silver-colored (amalgam) fillings. Dentists are increasingly using composite resin materials to fill teeth because many consumers prefer tooth-colored fillings, and composites are improving. Crowns (or caps) are additional procedures used to heal poorly broken-down teeth. Crowns are available in gold or other precious metals, porcelain, or stainless steel (usually used on baby teeth). What Happens When a Filling Is Placed? If your dentist decides to fill a cavity, they will first remove the decay and thoroughly clean the area. The cleaned-out cavity will then be refilled with any of the filling materials. How do I determine if I require a filling? Only your dentist can determine if you have a cavity that requires treatment. Your dentist will use a small mirror to examine the surfaces of each tooth during a checkup. Specialized instruments will be used to investigate anything that appears abnormal. Additionally, your dentist may X-ray your entire mouth or a section of it. The type of treatment chosen by your dentist will depend on the extent of decay damage. Visit now at Aspen Dental, Best Dental Clinic in Gurgaon for more information on your dental health.
