  2. Working with Data InData Visualization with Tableau Online Tutorialwe will discuss the “working of data”. We have the following topics to understand the working of data. • Groups • Hierarchies

Groups • Groups are convenient for dividing a dimension in a way not currently divided. • For Example: Under Business Segment you may have several segments that you want to appear as a single Segment called Core. Right in your view you can ctrl + click to highlight only those segments to be included in the new Segment and name the newly created group ‘Core’ . Lets review a superstore example now: • In the View ctrl + click and highlight the members of the dimension that you want to combine into a single group. • Right click the newly create group to Edit Alias and rename the group. • The Group is created.

Groups in the Data Window • Creating a group in the Data Window is just as easy. • In the Data Window, right click the dimension that contains the items you want to group. • In the Popup window ctrl + click to highlight the items to be grouped. Rename the Group, and click on the Group button to complete the Group (Refer the next slide for visual explanation)

  13. Creating Hierarchies • Hierarchies provide drill down capabilities and are easily created in the data window. Let’s take a look on how to create it…

  14. Creating Hierarchies • Determine your hierarchy, then right click the name of the dimension that will be the top of the hierarchy, and click on Create Hierarchy.

  15. Creating Hierarchies • You can add to the hierarchy by right clicking another dimension and choosing add to hierarchy.
