It was a line in Sir Thomas Overbury’s 1613 poem - „A Wife‟. “And all the carnall beauty of my wife, Is but skin-deep, but to two senses known; Short even of pictures, shorter liv‟d then life, And yet the love survives, that‟s built thereon: For our imagination is too high, For bodies when they meet, to satisfie.” - A stanza from the poem. The poem implies that beauty lies skin-deep and in the eyes of the beholder. An era where numerous beauty products like skincare, fragrances, and makeup lines, are being manufactured and pushed out into the world one after the other, bringing about an air of complication and doubt among the masses - the absurdity found in the overwhelming need to make blind and unreviewed product promises by brands are shooting the roof. With influencers being paid to promote brands on social media platforms to garner an audience, drive sales, and brand-build, the consumers - especially the millennial generation, are being thrown into the world of „needing to correct some dot or flaw‟ from a very young age. Although self-care is a priority, going overboard and blindly applying anything and everything to one’s body, is truly unhealthy. Learning, educating, and researching about a brand, its product line, its aims, product formulations, product reviews, etcetera, can help consumers decide if a brand is good for them or not.
