Cardiovascular Disease • This remains one of the biggest killers in the world today and it’s largely preventable. • We can all lower our risk of cardiovascular disease and this is especially true of those at high risk. The main risk factors are: • Age • Family History • Smoking • Diabetes • Raised Cholesterol • Hypertension • Obesity
Colorectal Cancer • A cancer of the colon or rectum, located at the digestive tract's lower end. • symptoms can often be a late sign of colorectal cancer, by the time they are present the disease may be at an advanced stage. Risk factors include: • Age • Family history • History of inflammatory bowel disease • Smoking • Obesity • Polyposis syndromes (FAP) • Dietary factors
Lung Cancer • This is the second most common cancer in the UK and can be difficult to diagnose in the early stages. • There are two main types – small cell and non-small cell. Survival rates are generally poor owing to diagnosis commonly occurring at a late stage. The main risk factors are: • Smoking • Passive smoking • Asbestos exposure • Radiation exposure
Breast Cancer • This is the most common cancer in females and the second most common cause of death in the UK. • The importance of screening cannot be underestimated – early detection and • improved treatments have vastly improved outcomes. • Risk factors include: • • Family history• Genetic mutations (BRCA1, BRCA2, TP53)• Hormone replacement therapy and t • he combined contraceptive pill
Osteoporosis • Osteoporosis is an important condition often neglected or not identified. It is essentially reduced bone density which commonly occurs in females after the menopause. • Oestrogen hormone has a role in protecting bone density, which declines after the menopause. • Risk factors for osteoporosis include: • Age• Premature menopause• Rheumatoid arthritis• Low BMI• Family history of hip fractures• Corticosteroid use• Smoking• Alcohol• Hyperthyroidism
