Some Course Requirements Internet Access: Some course material is online – graded homework, graded pre-lab questions, post-lab questions, lab procedures, lab safety quiz, lecture notes, my web site, Canvas, and email. There are several computer labs available on campus; Chemistry, CB 384 is one. Sapling Homework/Lab Account: You need to create and pay for an account at www.saplinglearning.com. Before the end of this first week, you must set up your account at Sapling – you need your official WWU name and the CRN # for your lab section. There are graded assignments due by 9/30/2013. Miscellaneous Requirements: Pass the Lab Safety Quiz before 12 noon on Thursday, 10/3/2013; Lecture & Lab Attendance; Lab Goggles (360o eye protection); Lab Coat(lab coats & goggles are available in our bookstore; a copy of our text by Gammon & Ebbing (General Chemistry), 10th or 9th edition; a C- or better grade in chemistry 121. You must have the Lab Coat & Goggles in order to attend the 1st lab next week.

Homework & Lab Safety Quiz • HOMEWORK: There are two types of assigned homework: 1. End-of-Chapter Homework: The lecture notes contain suggested homework problems. Try to finish these by the end of my lectures over that section. I will devote lecture time to answering questions over these. These will NOT be graded or turned in. 2. OnlineHomework:www.saplinglearning.com These assignments count as 13 % of your class grade. There is no time limit except for the deadline which will be given in Canvas & at the Sapling site. The deadlines are firm; no hardware, software, internet connection, memory, sickness, etc, excuses will be accepted if you miss the deadline. • Lab Safety Quiz: A tutorial, information, and the quiz are available on the Web at the following address: www.saplinglearning.com (under the lab part) The Safety Quiz & Lab login is your student ID without the “W” and without the numbers after the last dash. Password = last two ID digits & first two letters of last name, ie for W00182234-11 Jack Smith: ID = 00182234 and PW = 34Sm. Instructions & dates are given at the site. Note: you have to pass this quiz well before 12 NOON, Thursday, 10/3/2013 in order to stay in chem 122.
Grades & Laboratory 1. Lab Safety: Complete eye coverage goggles and lab coats must be worn at all times – obtain them at the bookstore. Other requirements are: no open shoes and no food or drinks in the lab. 2. General Lab Information: Attendance is required; consult all of the lab material given in Sapling – especially the policy on missing labs; the prelab must be finished the day before your lab. During lab download & complete the post-lab questions. Labs are to be turned in at the end of that lab. Note: For the lab you need to: 1) complete the pre-lab by the night before your lab. 2) review lab. 3) Bring GOGGLES, LAB COAT & the lab procedure to the lab. 3. Grade: Two exams = 40% Two Quizzes = 6% Final Exam = 26% Lab = 15% Online Homework = 13%
