This means following the instructions provided by your dentist or oral surgeon, including taking medications as prescribed and following any aftercare instructions. It also involves taking certain steps at home to ensure that your body heals properly and you don’t experience any complications.
TO DO : • Elevate your head – Sit in an upright position and keep your head above the heart. If you are going to take a nap or sleep, use extra pillows to keep your head elevated. This helps minimize swelling. • Apply cold compress for the first 24 hours after the procedure. • Apply warm compress – This helps alleviate the swelling. Apply it for 15 mins and then wait again for another 15 minutes before doing hot compress. This is usually done on the second day after operation. • Saltwater rinse- you can rinse your mouth warm water and salt to get rid of harmful bacteria. This is started 24 hours after the procedure. • Take your prescribed medications given by your dentist.
DON’T DO : • Do not use straws – do not use straws for the first twenty-four hours after surgery. This might dislodge the blood clot that has formed in the socket. • Do not smoke or drink alcohol – this may cause the level of pain to increase and will hinder the healing process. • Do not blow your nose – This may be hard, but you can wipe your nose and if you have to sneeze you should sneeze with an open mouth into a tissue. This is because we don’t want to dislodge the healing blood clot that has formed.
