Thisnewdiseasebecameknownas"insulin-resistantdiabetes"becauseithadthe elevatedbloodsugarsymptomofdiabetesbutrespondedpoorlytoinsulintherapy.Manyphysicianshadgreatsuccessintreatingthisdiseasethroughdiet.Agreatdealwaslearnedabouttherelationshipbetweendietanddiabetesinthe1930sand 1940s. Diabetes,whichhadaper-capitaincidenceof0.0028%attheturnofthecentury, hadby1933explodedby1,000%intheUnitedStatestobecomeadiseaseseenbymanydoctors.8Thisdisease,underavarietyofaliases,wasdestinedtogoontowreckthehealthofoverhalftheAmericanpopulationandincapacitatealmost20%bythe1990s. In1950,themedicalcommunitybecameabletoperformseruminsulinassays. Theseassaysquicklyrevealedthatthisnewdiseasewasn'tclassicdiabetes;itwascharacterizedbysufficient,oftenexcessive,bloodinsulinlevels. Theproblemwasthattheinsulinwasineffective;itdidnotreducebloodsugar.But sincethediseasehadbeenknownasdiabetesforalmost20years,itwasrenamedTypeIIdiabetes.ThiswastodistinguishitfromtheearlierTypeIdiabetes,causedbyinsufficientinsulinproductionbythepancreas. Hadthedietaryinsightsoftheprevious20yearsdominatedthemedicalscenefrom thatpointandintothelate1960s,diabeteswouldhavebecomewidelyrecognizedascurableinsteadofmerelytreatable.Instead,in1950,asearchwaslaunchedforanotherwonderdrugtodealwiththeTypeIIdiabetesproblem.
