  2. Hunting is much more than turning up at the expected time on the expected date. You have to be well prepared to give yourself the best chance at success if you have any hopes of getting the better of your prey. Most forms of hunting, whether you’re out big game hunting, wingshooting or buck hunting require the proper preparation from the hunter. You will obviously make sure you have the appropriate weapon and ammunition where that applies, but you will certainly have to consider other important issues too. White-tail deer hunting, a very popular activity across the southeastern parts of the US, is a good example where the hunter would do well to consider issues additional to their weapons. Buck, and other wildlife, often survive the elements – and hunters’ best efforts – simply by natural instinct and reacting to those influential circumstances that favor them, such as human scent, for example. The hunter, therefore, should do everything in his/her power not to let their scent interfere with their success. Because animals are so sensitive to smell, the hunter must take the necessary precautions to ensure they do not make it difficult for themselves. Hunters often book their hunting trip way ahead of time, far in advance of the dates that they set aside for, sometimes, the trip of a lifetime. They make sure they look at all the best options and then go ahead and visit the area that best suits their requirements. If it is white-tail hunting they book for, they will obviously do their best to have a successful hunt and leave with their trophy. But, not every hunt goes according to plan, certainly not if you do not prepare well. Deer are adjusted to survive in their natural habitat, which means they have, among certain skills and abilities, also superior sight and smell. They are very quick to react to strange smells and scents; these animals sense danger the moment any movement that they regard as unfriendly or dangerous catches their eye. The same is true for scent, especially human scent which they associate with an unnatural smell, one that may spell danger, and even if you are set up nicely in your stand, you may miss a great opportunity – because your scent gave you away! Experienced hunters will, therefore, always advise other hunters to make sure they reduce any obvious odors by washing any scent off their bodies before they walk to their position. It does help a great deal to buy certain products that help eliminate those scents, such as human odor, that the deer are sensitive to. Ask at shops that supply products and clothes to hunters, for example, if they can help, or whether they can offer you some information as to where you can get such odor elimination products.

  3. All of this may indeed help the hunter to remain undetected by the deer. Another very important factor to remain undetected is how you use wind direction to your advantage. Make sure you are positioned downwind from your prey, in other words that the wind blows in your direction, not from yours towards them. This is very important because many a hunter has wasted a great deal of effort and time by not heeding this rule. If the animal can smell you, you stand little chance. Make the wind work for you, not against. You want to get the most out of your visit: you have planned your hunting trip for a long time, you have looked at various options and made your decision about the lodge you have chosen. You have made all the preparations for a great hunt and memorable time.
