  1. About Lithium-Ion Batteries and Their Use It is almost unimaginable to think of a world in which it is not possible to store power. Thousands of years ago there was no need for this; however, modern man cannot survive without this function. Battery power over a wide front is one of the best ways to make sure we have power stored for later – often immediate – use. One such battery is the lithium-ion battery, also referred to as the Li-ion battery. This is a type of rechargeable battery that uses what is called a reversible reduction of lithium ions for energy or power to be started. This type of battery is used all over the world in consumer electronic goods, often of the portable kind that we use in our homes for entertainment, communications such as computers and recreation, i.e. leisure time. These goods are also referred to as so-called black goods, as they often come in black or dark casings, as opposed to white goods such as washing machines, dishwashers and freezers, for example. The Lithium-ion battery is also used to store energy for the EV - electric vehicle – a market which is becoming a much more important factor than many people initially thought it would. These are not the only industries as this type of battery has an important part to play elsewhere too: they are also used on a large scale by energy storage facilities such as power stations for electrical energy to be stored. These batteries are the best, and fastest responding, source of power where for example electric grids fail. The batteries can, within a matter of milliseconds, take over the function of the electricity supply where the grid falters. In addition to the mentioned sectors, lithium-ion is also used over a wide front by the military and aerospace industries. Of course, they are very useful in these – and other – industries because of the high energy and high-density qualities they are associated with. So, even though the lithium-ion battery was initially developed commercially for portable electronics, they are now part of our daily lives across several applications and in various industries such as the mentioned electric cars and medical devices, also include power tools, drones, satellites and smartwatches for example. Therefore the batteries’ designs and sizes are also adjusted accordingly to ensure they are fit for purpose. Also, there is a constant drive to see how these batteries can be utilized to help reduce carbon emissions and man’s carbon footprint across many industries, as one of the most important measures to help fight global warming.

  2. These batteries have not been developed to their full potential yet, as they are fit for frequency regulation and short-term storage to ultimately develop a battery that can be used over a wide front on the grid. It is true, however, that the lithium-ion batteries currently in use operate at high energy levels with expectations that many of them will be utilized still for years and decades to come. This has been achieved because of ongoing research and the development of superior products over years, which forms the basis of future-generation batteries too. These batteries can still be developed further before there can be any talk of their having reached their full potential. There are indeed companies that make this their vocation: to go on developing batteries, also lithium-ion batteries, to their full potential, which is still some time away. This research is applied on a great global scale since the batteries are used in so many industries and applications, with next- generation batteries, better than the current ones, or older ones, always being the aim. The lithium-ion battery does not only serve millions of people well every day – it is also one of the most researched technologies for future generations to benefit from. About Us: At Wildcat Discovery Technologies it is our express aim to discover new materials for energy applications over a wide front with a strong focus on developing breakthrough materials for primary as well as rechargeable batteries. We collaborate with different industries for the best outcome in terms of which we accelerate battery innovation and development. We synthesize and evaluate thousands of materials on an ongoing basis by using our proprietary, unique high throughput platforms to improve performance and advance R & D processes while reducing costs. We are constantly promoting partnerships and collaboration opportunities with interested parties all across the battery supply chain to include different industries, all with their unique demands and profile.
