Amazon requires any product (a) larger than 18″ x 14″ x 8” and/or (b) weighing 20 lbs or more to be “designed and certified as ready-to-ship within Tier 1 (FFP - Frustration-Free Packaging) or Tier 2 (SIOC - Ship in Own Container) of their Frustration-Free Packaging program.” The initiative is designed to reduce packaging waste and improve the unboxing experience for customers.
What is Frustration-Free Packaging? Frustration-Free Packaging is that which is specifically designed to be unpacked without the hassle and generates minimal waste. This type of packaging generally comes in a recyclable box or envelope without any unnecessary wrapping materials like plastic bindings, wire ties, or clamshell casings. It's designed to open quickly and easily, often with a tear strip or other simple mechanism.
Amazon first rolled out this program in 2008 for selected brands and since then the program has grown in scale and is now being extended to more products sold throughout Amazon.
What are the Packaging Requirements? There are three certification tiers to Amazon’s Frustration-Free Packaging program: Tier 1 | FFP (Frustration-Free Packaging) Tier 2 | SIOC (Ships in Own Container) Tier 3 | PFP (Prep-Free Packaging) ● ● ● If you product is (a) larger than 18″ x 14″ x 8” and/or (b) weighs 20 lbs or more, it must be designed and certified as Tier 1 (FFP) or Tier 2 (SIOC) within the program.

What’s excluded from this program? Amazon has excluded items where no added shipping packaging could result in a poor customer experience such as intimate or high-value items, fragile items, collectibles, or where handling the item may be dangerous to Amazon workers and/or our delivery partners such as items with sharp edges.
Can fragile items qualify for this program Fragile items, which are any item that could easily leak or break during the fulfilment process, may qualify to ship in product packaging but go through more rigorous testing first.
Test and Evaluate Packaging To enroll products and qualify for the SIPP program, all packaging must pass physical performance tests through a self-drop test or International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) 6 lab test. Determine if you can self-test or have an ISTA 6 lab test your packaging: Self-test: Applicable if product is non-fragile, and does not contain liquids or sharp items, and is not granular with a diameter <1” ● ISTA 6 Lab Test: If your product is fragile, OR contains sharp items, OR contains liquids, you cannot self-test. You will need to submit an ISTA-6A lab report from an ISTA-6 lab in Amazon’s APASS network for certification ●
