Regular HVAC cleaning and maintenance not only saves your money on energy bill but also extends the life of a HVAC unit. Here are some easy steps to clean and maintain your air conditioning unit… www.windycityair.net
SHUT OFF THE POWER Due to the risks of working around electricity and the air-conditioner’s moving parts, it’s essential to completely turn off the power unit while cleaning the HVAC unit On the exterior condenser/compressor, look for a shut-off box near the unit. Indoors, also turn the power off at the breaker box. www.windycityair.net
REMOVE THE DEBRIS Remove the fan cage from the exterior compressor. Use a screwdriver or wrench to remove the fasteners and lift the cage or fan grill away from the top of the unit. Use hand or wet/dry vacuums to clean the leaves and other debris. www.windycityair.net
CLEAN & STRAIGHTEN THE FINS Use fin cleaning spray or strong stream garden hose spray through the fins from the inside out to blast any built up dirt or debris from between them. Any reduction in air-flow through the fins can reduce efficiency, so carefully straighten the bent fins using a butter knife or commercially available fin-straightening tool. www.windycityair.net
CLEAN THE EVAPORATOR COIL Inside the blower or furnace unit, dust off the coil using a soft brush and then spray the coil with no-rinse coil cleaner. The spray will foam up and then drip into the drain pan. Clean the drain pan with soap, hot water, and a little bleach. www.windycityair.net
