Story of and of Models 16 | Nov, 2024 | www.womenworldindia.com
Models of Life 17 | Nov, 2024 | www.womenworldindia.com
T Darwin and the Evolutionary Model he journey of life on Earth is nothing short of awe- inspiring complexity, shaped by billions of years. This journey has been understood, represented, and sought across generations by scientists and thinkers in an attempt to explain life's origin, development, and the principles governing its existence: ‘models of life.’ These models not only reflect humanity's ever-expanding knowledge but, more importantly, show the continuous interplay of scientific discovery, philosophical inquiry, and technological advancement. The most impactful model of life in modern times was Charles Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection, developed during the 19th century. In his landmark publication On the Origin of Species in 1859, Darwin introduced the idea that species share a common origin and change through time through the process of natural selection. This model of evolution revolutionized the concept of the diversity and interconnection of life by its dynamic, tree- like structure replacing a static, hierarchical view of life, based on change, adaptation, and survival, thus reshaping biology and influencing sociology, psychology, and anthropology. The Foundation: Ancient Philosophies and Early Theories The earliest models of life were deeply rooted in philosophy and mythology. Ancient Greek thinkers like Aristotle proposed the idea of a "Great Chain of Being," a hierarchical structure that placed all forms of life in a ranked order. This concept mirrored the societal structures of the time and emphasized the interconnectedness of life, albeit in a static and unchanging framework. The Molecular Era: DNA and the Code of Life The twentieth century brought a molecular era, marked by the discovery of DNA's structure by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953, a breakthrough revealing the molecular basis of heredity and genetic variation, cementing DNA as the "blueprint of life." In contrast, cultures everywhere began to tell their own stories about life's differentness and complexity. From Hinduism's conception of an eternal cycle of birth and rebirth to indigenous cosmologies that placed humans in harmony with nature, these early models reflected humanity's intrinsic curiosity about life's purpose and origin. With the advent of molecular biology, life was transformed into a system based on information storage, retrieval, and expression. The scientists began to see life as an intricate interplay of genetic instructions and biochemical processes. The discovery of the double helix transformed medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology and let humans manipulate the very code of life. The Advent of Science: Mechanistic Models of Life It marked the changeover from speculative philosophical pursuits to empirical inquiry during the Renaissance. During the 16th and 17th centuries, there emerged the scientific revolution and paved the way for mechanistic models of life. In their works, living things appeared as highly complicated machines directed according to physical and chemical laws for René Descartes and many other thinkers. Systems Biology and Holistic Models Along with advancing scientific tools came the need to develop more integrative models of life. Systems biology is a discipline that emerged to view organisms as a network of interconnected systems rather than isolated parts. This holistic approach emphasizes the interactions between genes, proteins, cells, and their environments. The invention of the microscope in the 17th century unveiled a secret world, full of microorganisms in a world not previously so simple. A new chapter of questions about life's prime building blocks was ushered to the world by observations of such "animalcules," or microbes, that Antonie van Leeuwenhoek made in the form of future models in biology and chemistry. Incorporating complexity science, systems biology expanded our understanding of life's resilience and adaptability. It provided insights into how ecosystems function, how diseases like cancer arise from system-wide imbalances, and how organisms respond to environmental changes. 18 | Nov, 2024 | www.womenworldindia.com
Artificial Life and Computational Models The life models' story is yet to be told. It is a reflection of the insatiable thirst for knowledge, along with humanity's creativity and innovative impulse. As we move forward, these models will not only deepen our understanding of life but serve as guidance toward meeting the pertinent challenges of the future. The digital age has brought the most unprecedented advancements in computational models of life. Today, researchers simulate biological systems using algorithms, allowing them to create virtual ecosystems to study evolution, adaptation, and genetic drift. Artificial life is a field at the crossroads of biology and computer science, which explores principles of life through digital simulations, robotics, and synthetic biology. In essence, it is evolution in life models that symbolizes life itself: dynamic, adaptive, and continuously unfolding. Through these models, man continues to unravel the mysteries of existence, asking the question that has long puzzled generations: What is the meaning of being alive? These models challenge the traditional definitions of life, raising philosophical questions on the nature of existence. Can a self-replicating robot or a machine learning algorithm mimic life's fundamental traits? Such questions push the boundaries of our understanding and redefine what it means to be alive. Ethical and Philosophical Implications The evolution of life models is not only a scientific journey but also a very philosophical one. With each and every model, humanity's profound questions of what life really is, the ethical implications of changing it, and how much technological advancement should human beings be able to give rise to without destroying nature's complexity are forced to find answers. For example, tools such as CRISPR which can modify genes raise the question of unintended consequences, equitable access, and even the misuse of technology. Similarly, models of artificial life blur the distinction between what is natural and artificial and make us think through our relationship with technology. The Future of Life Models The coming years will see unparalleled changes in technology and in the environment, and such will change life models: Synthetic biology will make possible the designing of novel life forms; Artificial intelligence will introduce ever-deepening blurs about organic versus artificial systems at large. All these require models directed toward sustainability and ecological balance-the former by curbing climatic change and protecting biodiversity loss. 19 | Nov, 2024 | www.womenworldindia.com

O winter. While these changes do affect our overall health and mood as well as even immune functions, how cells in the body can sense and respond to them is a very intriguing scientific research. Cells are far more intricate than what one would imagine. ur bodies are indeed equipped with super mechanisms to adjust to changes, from the long daylight hours of summer to the chilly nights of Within these basic units, there exist various internal systems interacting with the surroundings to indicate changes in season that would eventually affect the process within the body. It turns out there's "magic" in this single-cell treatment as evidence of how our bodies have evolved to somehow synchronize with Earth's cycles. Suprachiasmatic Nucleus (SCN): The Brain's Clock For example, circadian rhythms as controlled by the brain is a simple way in which our body responds to changes in seasons. The SCN (suprachiasmatic nucleus), which is in the hypothalamus, is known as the master clock, where it controls rhythms in accordance with light and dark stimuli. When we are awake, exposure to light triggers the SCN to send signals through the pineal gland that suppresses melatonin, the chemical causing sleep. Conversely, when the days are short and daylight hours are decreased, it provides less stimulation for SCN to produce lesser amounts of melatonin, which affects more than sleep patterns, to prepare the body for the colder months ahead. How Do Cells Sense Seasonal Changes? in the Body The SCN is therefore the central coordinating hub of peripheral clocks which are present in virtually all cell types. These clocks modulate various metabolic and cellular processes so that even though individual cells cannot visually perceive changes due to seasonal events they still believe in signals orchestrated by the SCN that would keep them in tune with these changes. Photoperiodism: How Light Influences Cells Seasonal changes are also felt by cells via photoperiodism-the biological reaction to changes in the duration of light throughout the seasons. This phenomenon is not limited to mankind but rather involves countless other animals and plants. Photoreceptors in the retina can be specialized and measure changes in daylight hours, passing this information along to the SCN, which-as described above-regulates the body's general response. Therefore, for instance, shorter days will cause the biological processes responsible for metabolism, hormone production, and immune response to be activated in order to get the body ready for the seasonal changes. 24 | Nov, 2024 | www.womenworldindia.com
A Single Cell Magic 25 | Nov, 2024 | www.womenworldindia.com
Cells of the body, in most tissues but more specially in skin, respond to light exposure by creating vitamin D. Lowered sunlight in winter means vitamin D production is decreased and cellular functions are affected as the body relates less efficiently with the absorption of calcium or the immune response. Similarly, brain cells respond to shorter days with increased melatonin production, affecting sleep patterns and mood among many other things. Thus, the body can change with seasons without use of technology. generally peak with the colder months when infections such as colds and flu are more readily available. Immune cells can sense seasonal changes through a few key avenues: Temperature and Daylight Exposure: The immune cells react to the reduced temperatures as well as the shorter daylight exposures by modulating the production of inflammatory molecules in the body to prepare to fight the infections. Hormonal Responses and Their Cellular Consequence Vitamin D Receptors: Many immune cells are vitamin D receptors. Hence, with less sunlight exposure in winter, the vitamin D decreases, which affects the immune system. Fewer levels of vitamin D may make the immune cells more vulnerable to infections, thus partially explaining why most occur in winter. Hormones are the messengers in the body whose job is to deliver seasonal messages to cells in most types of systems. The effects of daylight duration not only impact melatonin, cortisol, and serotonin-but these hormone changes affect the way cells respond to seasonal environmental changes. Melatonin: The creasing fall of night means the hormone levels of melatonin rise up, accelerating the fall into sleep by dusk since there is less sunlight. Melatonin attaches to specific receptors on the cells of the body and initiates an uninterrupted wave of messages to the cells that it is time to get restful, repair themselves, and boost up their immune systems during colder climates. These adaptations better enable our bodies to fight seasonal infections and respond to the demands placed on the immune system throughout the year. Gene Expression and Epigenetics: A Cellular Memory of Seasons Seasonal changes even affect gene expression inside the cells, it has been found that there are some genes which the cells are active at specific times of the year. For example, those genes that are part of inflammation processes are more active during the winter months, thus giving immunity a head start by having higher rates of seasonal illnesses. These cells thus have an "epigenetic" memory of the environment allowing them to prepare and adapt to seasonal patterns without any annual stimulation. Cortisol: Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands; levels will vary with seasonal changes. Increased cortisol during winter due to reduced daylight also interacts with other receptors on cells in various organs to impact immune responses, metabolism, and even emotions. Serotonin: Commonly referred to as the "happiness hormone," serotonin is positively correlated with sunlight exposure and strongly influences mood levels. The reduced exposure of sunlight in winters reduces serotonin production, hence generally influencing mood. Cells may even alter what they do in response to signals from their neighboring cells and tissues, adjusting gene expression to adapt to the seasonal needs of the organism. This is particularly relevant to cells making up organs or systems directly impacted by seasonal variations, like cells in the skin, immune cells, and even neurons in the brain. These hormones maintain cellular processes through sticking to receptors on the cell membranes, enabling the cell to "feel" changes and respond accordingly. The fluctuations of these hormones in the two seasons is important because it makes sure that cells within a biological system remain well-balanced and ready for sudden changes in their surroundings. Seasonal Fluctuations on Immune Cells It is very sensitive to seasonal changes, and the majority of immune cells have their activities at various levels throughout the year. Priori?zing Women's Wellness by Using Ayurvedic Wisdom I Lanka to India in less than an hour, but talking to our neighbours take us months. Through all the conveniences, time still feels like Sand, getting away with each time we try to hold it. We want to achieve everything. In times when women were not given the right to educate, they had no choice but to be at home catering to only homely things. Then came a time when education was prioritized thanks to our women leaders and women started building up better generations. They evolved into financially stable beings but still had to juggle between home and work and this became too much! It came to a point of explosion as women then started suffering with glucose imbalance issues, PCOD, infertility, painful periods, weight issues, anxieties and depressions. The struggle is real adding hormonal changes into this chaotic pattern or less sleep, more stress and imbalanced diet. n today’s fast paced world of immense Internet Connectivity, the world we live in, seems to have shrunken into our fists, or fingertips! We reach from Sri That is the time when women started looking back to their roots, which were written in an authentic evident-based medically researched books of Ayurveda. Ayurveda originates from India, a land where every State has a geographical and morphological variation. India is seen as the country of colours and you can see this great variation even in the fruits and vegetables that grow specific to the States. 32 | Nov, 2024 | www.womenworldindia.com
We often forget to understand that we work the best when we relax. Unlike our primitive selves where humans needed to learn to work harder, and walk faster; now times have changed and we now need apps to teach us to relax and take life slower, going one step at a time, like the walk uphill towards a Monastery. It will also give brain power and refresh your taste buds. If you eat this laddoo at breakfast, it will give you more energy for the day. If you eat this by evening, it will make you feel lazy. Prioritizing WHEN to eat certain things than WHAT to eat, is more important. 3 Golden Rules of Thumb for Maintaining Gut and Brain health: With so much happening on the outside, women need to pause, and look inwards to find their centre of balance deep within them. We have heard of ‘Me Time’ which is usually taken as 1-2 hrs of time one needs to take away form their day to do something that they enjoy doing. Those hours are fully their own and they must focus on themselves doing whatever they like- be it watching Netflix, sleeping, scrolling, reading, going for a walk, etc. 1. Curb your sweet tooth a minute before meals. This will give you satisfaction, and turn the food into energy without causing heaviness. 2. Fill out your journal of gratitude by thanking your heart first thing in the morning (as it worked the whole night for you) and brain last thing at night (as it was burning for you the whole day). A new concept of ‘Mindful Me Time’ refreshingly lets a woman focus on every task she does by pausing to take a minute to herself. In that minute she can turn inwards. She can access her emotions. If there are negativities built up, these 60 secs provide her time to regulate and check in with herself by doing what she likes the most. She could grab a green tea, stretch, nap or go for a brisk walk down the corridor for the next few mins. This ‘mindful me-time’ is not an hour post work, but a minute away re-centring in every new task. 3. Go for a walk or do any one of your favorite physical activity for atleast 20 mins in a day, but out in open. Breathe and get your happy hormones going. I am born in a family of very strong women. My grandmother at the age of 85 still makes incredible artificial flowers and that’s her hobby which she is occupied in, happily for almost 12 hours a day. She is the one who says- Women need to have hobbies that keep them happy throughout their lives. Once career, families and everything else passes, you are left on your own. So know your thing which is purely and solely yours and can make you happy. Prioritizing that, I have seen my mother though being a practising doctor, touches base with her jewellery making skills very often. I dance. I dance to any tune I love and that liberates me. Posing a question to you, what is that one thing as a women would you keep doing that exuberates happiness from you? A woman’s happiness is her basic life- need, not a luxury. And it starts when you prioritize your own health beyond anything. If she keeps well, the entire family flourishes. Stress levels and Hormonal responses: Knowing your own mind-body constituency, known as individualistic ‘Prakruti’ is a good place to start knowing your own body. You can then self-access stress levels and your own hormonal responses. Hormones talk, only if we listen to them. These are not just mood swings, but an intense internal chemical reaction that go inside our body throughout the month. Our responses to stress are often dependent on how we are feeling internally. To feel internally good tools such as Meditation, Yogasanas, Ayurvedic Seasonal Therapies and a balanced approach towards diet and lifestyle are essential. I saw my mother doing Yogasanas for maintaining her flexibility while her kids were growing up. Though I didn’t take it seriously back then, I realized that we often take the preventive aspects for granted in our lives. This then piles up into a disorder one-day digging holes into our pockets. Dr. Devika Deshmukh MD Ayurveda Panchakarma (Gold Medallist India) RMAS, CMT (USA) Ayurveda has a very individualistic approach to understanding the physical, physiological and psychological aspects of a human being. For eg: eating a laddoo, might give you mental happiness and glucose in the blood. 34 | Nov, 2024 | www.womenworldindia.com
