What do you need to know before using firewood

Make sure that the firewood has been seasoned properly, i.e it does not have a high amount of moisture, as this would reduce its efficiency drastically. 1. What do you need to know before using firewood? Firewood suppliers

  2. It is essential to keep a few points in mind before opting for firewood: 1. Choose the right kind of firewood, which would cause less smoke and provide heating as per your requirement. For example, you should avoid resinous firewood such as pine, fir as they blacken the chimneys and cause a lot of smoke. 2. Make sure that the firewood has been seasoned properly, i.e it does not have a high amount of moisture, as this would reduce its efficiency drastically. The firewood which you opt to buy should be split for a year or 6 months and stored in an elevated and ventilated location away from moisture

  3. 3. If you have access to both denser and the lighter firewood, use the denser fuel during the chilled weather and the lighter fuel during the spring or fall season when less heating is needed. • 4. Avoid burning Christmas tree wood, scraps of painted or treated wood in your fireplace or stove as they may emit fumes which would cause a lot of discomforts and serious health issues too.

  4. Advantages of using seasoned firewood: It is highly essential to use seasoned firewood as this has many benefits, which are enumerated below: 1. Freshly cut wood has about 45% moisture but seasoned wood has only 20% moisture. Low moisture content implies better efficiency. 2. They can start burning easily, produce more heat and burn in a cleaner way, that does not pollute the environment. 3. Sun-dried wood or the wood that has been dried by other means properly ensures their longevity and can be stored for years together, provided they do not come in contact with moisture or the insects during their storage. 4. Burning green wood will consume a lot of energy as it will first need the energy to get the moisture evaporated. So, ultimately you will be delivered with less heat and lots of acidic water will be deposited in the chimney. 5. The safest way to ensure proper burning of the wood is to get them in the spring season before it has to be burnt, and then it needs to be stored properly so that it can be seasoned naturally and become efficient.

  5. What do you need to ask the firewood supplier before purchasing? • In case you are unable to identify if the firewood is green or not, you can ask the seller when it was cut. Also if it has a firmly attached bark with sticky sap, then it is not seasoned well. • You should know if the fore wood has a diameter of more than 5 inches because they have to be split before using. But in case a quickfire is needed, it won’t be a good option. Better enquire dor smaller firewood which can fit your firepit. • Know the species of firewood from the seller because if it is a softwood, it burns fast, leaves few coals and releases a lot of smoke that blackens the chimney. For outdoor fires, seasoned softwood can be used but this is not a suitable option if a long lasting fire is needed.
