  4. Do you know exactly what is under the rock? • Could something under the rock bite you? Beware of What Lies Under the Rock

  6. …Marijuana …Prostitution …Same-sex marriage …Assisted suicide Legalization of…. What’s hiding under these rocks?

  7. Can the words you choose create more controversy? • Can the way you frame an issue dictate opinion? • Can playing the devil’s advocate backfire? Don’t Get Caught Under the Rock

  8. Is the issue a dead issue? • Could discussing the issue lead to new prejudices? • Could discussing the issue bring sadness over what has already passed? Know Which Rocks to Leave Unturned

  9. Define terms clearly (decriminalization vs. legalization; ban vs. restrict) • Define perimeters of an issue (decriminalization of marijuana does not mean legalizing “hard drugs”). • Be careful about voicing your opinion. • Avoid “Us vs. Them” generalizations. • Check the lines of logic. • Use materials students can related to (novels, movies, songs) Some General Tips
