  3. But …..does that include women? • As long as they stayed out of politics • In response: Olympe de Gouges • Declaration of Rights of Women National Assembly ignored her plea for women

  4. Women March for Bread • Louis refused to accept the new laws of the assembly • Thousands of women march to court at Versailles • Met Louis and told of starving children • **Forced king to accept new decrees

  5. Crowd demanded royal family return to Paris • Women “escorted” the family and Louis brought flour with him for the people • Royal family kept “prisoner” in Paris

  6. Next attack: The Church • Church symbol of old order • National Assembly seized landholdings • Many Catholics were now enemies of the revolution

  7. Constitution 1791 • Limited monarchy • King + Legislative Assembly= to make laws • Only most affluent could be elected • Men over 25 who paid tax could vote

  8. King and family try to flee France but are recognized and returned • Legislative Assembly meets for first time • Leaders in Austria and Prussia see the threat and try and help Louis. • LA declare war on Austria, France looses and distrust begins • **Political radicals form and mob attacks begin- capture king and demand end of monarchy
