  1. September 29, 2008 Today we will:

  2. 1st period • Review rock lab • Complete USGS reading • Complete 3 gizmo quizzes • Rockhound! (rock creations, “quiz”) • Rockhound Home Page • Notes if time allows…layers of the earth

  3. 3rd PERIOD • Review rock lab • Finish packet work • Gizmo quizzes • Rock hound • Rockhound Home Page

  4. 4TH AND 7TH PERIOD • Gizmo lab • Complete 3 gizmos • Rockhound • Rockhound Home Page

  5. September 30, 2008 • Today we will: • Make an inference referencing the picture • Devils Tower National Monument - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia • Show you the rock hound website • Review packet work • Eating activity • Review for test on rocks • Start layers of the earth • Homework: chapter 3 test tomorrow!!!

  6. What does each represent and why? • Hershey kiss: • Igneous melts in your mouth • Starburst: • METAMORPHIC • heat and pressure only changes it, not melts it • Cracker, fluff, sprinkles, gummies: • Sedimentary rock full of layers of sediments!

  7. REVIEW • PAGE 105 12-19, 22 • PAGE 106 23-26

  8. The Layers of the Earth • I want you to learn: • Position • Composition • Density

  9. Inner Core • Solid • Most dense • Iron and nickel • (Location draw picture from board)

  10. The “why’s” • Why is it solid? • The intense pressure does not allow molecules to spread apart • Why is it in the middle of the earth? • It is so packed full of material, it sinks to the middle

  11. Outer Core • Liquid • Less dense than inner core • Iron and nickel

  12. The “Why’s” • Why is the outer core liquid? • It’s intensely hot!!!, not enough pressure to be solid • Closer to surface than inner core, so it’s less dense

  13. Mantle • Thickest layer • Plasticlike, not quite liquid, not quite solid • Almost “gooey” • Less dense than inner and outer core

  14. Crust • Outer skin of earth • Includes dry land and ocean floor • Continental crust: crust not covered with ocean water • Oceanic Crust: crust covered with ocean water • Least dense of all layers! So it seems to float….

  15. Lithosphere vs. Asthenosphere • Lithosphere: • Top sub layer • Includes both continental and oceanic crust • Top portion of mantle and the crust equals the lithosphere

  16. Asthenosphere • Sub layer most ooey-gooey portion of mantle

  17. 10/3 Today we will… • Review notes • Take short open note quiz on basic layers of earth • Review new (8th grade terms) vocab to describe the layers of earth • WORKSHEET ON CONVECTION

  18. Quiz #8 • 1. Which of the four layers is the thickest? • 2. Which of the four layers is at the center of the earth? • 3. Which of the four layers is the most dense? • 4. Which of the four layers is the least dense? • 5. What phase of matter is the inner core in?

  19. Oceanic vs. Continental crust • Crust covers the entire surface of earth • Some of the crust is under large bodies of water, some is not. • Can you determine which is which?

  20. Oceanic • Thinner than continental crust • Very dense • Under ocean water

  21. Continental crust • Thicker than oceanic layer • Land • Not as dense as oceanic…. • Why?

  22. What happens to hot air????Convection Cells/currents • Hot air ___________ • As it rises, it ___________ • Then that cool air __________ • It gets closer to surface of earth so it ___________up • Then it _____________ • This is called a _________________

  23. Worksheet!!! • LET’S RELATE THE CONCEPT OF HOT AIR RISES AND COOL AIR SINKS TO THAT OF MATERIAL IN THE MANTLE…. • APPLY WORKSHEET. USE PARTNERS.

  24. Quick animation • Mantle Convection | Flash simulation, Animation, Illustration, Picture, Diagram – eduMedia

  25. The Joke for 7th period • Two Geologists are walking across a granite outcrop one day. The first says to the second • - "Hey, this terrain is unmetamorphosed". Replies the second one, - • "No Schist". • GET IT, SCHIST IS METAMORPHIC ROCK AND GRANITE IS IGNEOUS.
