  1. VERBS Words that name an action or describe a state of being. They describe what is happening in the sentence. Every complete sentence needs to include at least one verb.

  2. List all the action verbs you see.   3. Action Verbs • Tells what action someone or something is performing • Examples: walk, sailed, played, migrate, raced, crossed, learn and arrive.

  4. Transitive and Intransitive Verbs • Transitive Verbs: action verb that directs action from the performer of the action toward the receiver of the action. • Example: The captain rang the bell. • The captain sailed the ship.

  5. Transitive and Intransitive Verbs Etc. • Intransitive Verbs: expresses action or tells something about the subject of the sentence but does not direct action toward another noun or pronoun • Example: The bell rang for dinner. • The ship sailed out to sea.

  6. Connects a noun or pronoun with a word that identifies or describes it. A linking verb does not show action! Example: New York is a city. LINKING VERBS

  7. Helping Verbs • Added before another verb to make a verb phrase. • Verb phrase = helping verb + main verb Helping Verbs List: Is am are was were be been being do does did has have had can may will shall could would should might must
