Burglary N.R.S. • NRS 205.060  Burglary: Definition; penalties; venue. •      1.  A person who, by day or night, enters any house, room, apartment, tenement, shop, warehouse, store, mill, barn, stable, outhouse or other building, tent, vessel, vehicle, vehicle trailer, semitrailer or house trailer, airplane, glider, boat or railroad car, with the intent to commit grand or petit larceny, assault or battery on any person or any felony, or to obtain money or property by false pretenses, is guilty of burglary.

  3. *Definition of Burglary for your notes: • Burglary • Every person who, either by day or night, enters any structure, with INTENT to commit grand or petit larceny, or ANY felony, or assault or battery is guilty of burglary

  4. *Definition of Structure • Structure • Defined as a house, room, apartment, tenement, shop, warehouse, store, mill, barn, stable, outhouse or other building, tent, vessel, vehicle, vehicle trailer, semitrailer or house trailer, airplane, glider, boat or railroad car. • This does not include porches, patios or fenced in yards.

  5. *Possession of Burglary Tools • Possession of Burglary Tools • Every person who shall have in his possession in the day or nighttime, any instrument, designed or commonly used for the commission of burglary, under circumstances evincing an intent to use or employ said instrument is guilty.

  6. *Burglary • Inference of intent for burglary involves the following elements: • Unlawfully breaks and enters a structure; or • Unlawfully enters a structure

  7. Burglary Questions • What is the ADDR? • Is this a house or APT? • When did this occur? • How did they get inside the house? • Forced entry? • What was taken? • Has the interior been checked? • If not, change to Priority 1

  8. Burglary Questions • PR name/PHN #? • If PR not waiting inside the RES, where can they be contacted? • Get DESC • If PR waiting inside RES, advise the PR to not touch anything or clean up. • PR’s DESC not NEC

  10. Larceny • Every person who feloniously steals, takes and carries, leads or drives away the personal goods or property of another of the value of $650 or more, or a motor vehicle or firearm regardless of the value, is guilty of grand larceny.

  11. Petit Larceny • This is under when the amount is under $650.00

  12. Common Petit Larceny Crimes: • Merchandise Skip • Beer or Cigarette Skip • These are often called in as just occurred crimes. • Fortunately, security does apprehend these suspects at times so they may be calling in to advise you that they have a suspect in custody in their office.

  13. What do you ask? • Location • PR's name and callback number • In progress? • Are the suspects at the scene or in the area? • Was force used? • What was taken? • What was the approximate dollar amount? • Call us back if the item was misplaced and/or you find it.

  14. If someone is in custody: • What is the ADDR? • Name of the BIZ? • How many are in custody and where? • No DESC is needed because SUSP isn’t going anywhere • Is SUSP behaving or combative? • If combative upgrade to PRI 1

  15. Larceny From Person • Every person who, under circumstances not amounting to robbery, with INTENT to steal, takes FROM the person of another, without his consent, any money or thing of value

  16. Remember…there is a difference! • 407 • By means of force or violence or fear of injury, immediate or future • Two types of 414C • Pickpocket • Purse Snatch

  17. Lost or Found Items: • Location • PR’s name and address • Description of the lost or found item

How do you know what to make your call? • Always refer back to the law and description of the crime itself. • If you are unsure you can always look at the definitions again in your notes and/or Nevada Revised Statutes • And, you can always put the person on hold and ask a supervisor/instructor.

  20. Things to Remember: • Use your questioning to analyze the call in order to determine what time of crime you are dealing with. • Get the pertinent information • Ask for help if you are not sure of something • Use the correct abbreviations • And, when in the simulator room ALWAYS log your calls
