  2. Who are we? • The University Council of Modern Languages (UCML) • established in 1993 • overarching national organisation • Represents interests of modern languages, linguistics and cultural and area studies • in higher education • England, N Ireland, Scotland, Wales

  4. Which languages do we represent? • French, Spanish, German, Italian, Middle Eastern studies, Far East Languages, EFL • Also • linguistics, translation and interpreting, area studies, initial teacher training • Names of subject reps posted on the ‘About page’

  13. Language Trends survey 2014The health of the sector • Some worrying trends: • Languages post-16 decreasing • 43% of independent schools report decline.

  14. Language Trends survey 2014The health of the sector • Languages at primary: • 75% offer French • 20% offer Spanish • Transition to secondary is a concern • Only 11% liaise with secondary schools. • Only 27% enable pupils to continue same language at secondary
