  3. Madam C.J. Walker • The first self-made female millionaire invented a hair product for African-American women. Walker manufactured the product in Indianapolis, eventually on Indiana Avenue. She taught others how to run their own businesses. She donated much of her money to charities, schools, orphanages, retirement homes, the NAACP and the YMCA.

  4. Mary Ellen Cable • Important school teacher in Indianapolis Public Schools. Later she became principal. She trained 61 teachers, five of which later became principals. She was the first president of Indiana’s NAACP chapter.

  5. Famous Musicians of Indiana Avenue: • Freddie Hubbard: Played trumpet • Hampton Family: 12 members in the family, all played an instrument. • Wes Montgomery: Played guitar. Famous for his guitar solos and unique style of playing his instrument with his thumb.
