My animal is a polar bear • They are the largest land carnivore • The scientific name is UrsusMaritimus • There are 19 different types of polar bears Introduction
Polar Bears are: • Tall and grow up to 8 feet, just like Black Bears • They weigh about 1,000 pounds • It has black skin and clear fur, so their fur is not white • The fur feels like a nice soft teddy bear • Their fur is oily and repels water Physical Features
Polar bears have: • long snouts with a black nose at the end • black coating on the bottom of their paws • paws are also slightly webbed • small white ears that on the top side of their head • eyes are small and black • long, sharp nails • a little tail More Physical Features
They live in: • the Arctic • Near the seas of the Northern Hemisphere • Parts of the United States,Canada, Greenland, Norway, and Russia Their Habitat
Snowy weather • They love the arctic climate and temperatures can drop down to 45 degrees below zero • 50-60 degrees average temperature in the summer • One of the coldest environments • In the summer it has lots of plants so they can eat • They live pretty high in the mountains, because it`s colder up there Climate that Polar Bears Love
Polar bears live up to 15 to 20 years in the wild • They can live up to 40 years in captivity • Polar bears are endangered because of global warming • Losing the sea ice is their biggest threat…no ice, no home Lifespan
Polar bears are carnivores, they are actually the biggest carnivore!! • They eat: • Seals • Partly ringed seals • Fish • Sea birds • Also in spring and summer they eat grass, lichen, seaweed and berries What They Eat
Prey of… Predator to… No animals eat Polar bears-they are the top of the arctic food chain But people kill or shave their fur to make, carpets, blankets, furniture , and other things that you might want from a Polar bear’s fur • seals • fish • seabirds • Ringed seals Hunting
Polar bears have been known to swim 60 miles(97 kilometers) at a time with out stopping • They wait by the water until the seals come up for air and then they bite them • They stand on their hind legs that’s how they play Behavior-How They Act
The cubs mom digs a den so they can stay warm when they give birth • They give birth in winter • The cubs mom stays with the cubs in summer for 38% of their time • Adult male polar bears hunt for about 25% of their time during spring • And about 40% of their time during the summer Polar Bear Babies
Polar bears have webbed feet to help them swim in the water • Their fur is oily and repels water so they don’t get cold and can dry quickly • Their long sharp nails help them grip onto the ice so they don’t slipand they can also grab onto their prey • They have sharp teeth to help them eat their prey • The black coating on their feet helps keep their feet warm on the snow and ice • They are white (because of the sun’s reflection) which helps them camouflage in the snow so they can surprise their prey. Physical Adaptations
Under a Polar bears fur is black skin , so you would think that it`s white but it`s fur is clear because the sun reflects on the black skin that makes the fur clear • They have longer heads than other bears and longer noses too because this gives them a superb sense of smell • Some people think say a polar bear can smell a seal from more then three miles away • They have three layers to keep them warm • The polar bear wears a parka and a wet suit, it`s fur coat works like a parka and the blubber works like a wet suit • They have blubber to keep them warm especially in the water Physiological Adaptations
They are very strong runners so that helps them run away from their predator • They stay with their cubs for three years to make sure that they teach them how to survive • They are the biggest animal in the Arctic that helps them get their prey and predator Behavioral Adaptations
It even eats humans • When a person eats polar bear liver, after a while the person’s skin will peel off • Polar bears have three fat layers of coat, I would get HOT in that Fun Polar Bear Facts
