Annual Report OnScreening Korean superior varieties, Hybriding, and Producing Virus-free Seed Potato using Aeroponic Production Systems Cao Dinh Dung Potato, Vegetable & Flower Research Center Dalat, Viet Nam
Contents • General information • Introduction • Main Activities • Suggestions for project • Project Impacts and Recommendations • Future Plan
General information Country: Viet Nam Principal Investigator: Mr. Nguyen The Nhuan Organization: Potato, Vegetable and Flower Research Center Project Duration: Three years from July, 2016 to July, 2019
I. Introduction • Total production area per year • Area: 30.000 - 35,000 ha • Productivity: 600,000tons • Cultivated area can be expanded to 100,000 ha • Current averaged yield • 16-18tons per ha
Distribution of potato cultivation • Red River Delta (70-80%) - Cultivation: Open Field - Cropping season: 1 • Dalat, Lam Dong province (20-30%) - Cultivation: Green house, Open Field - Cropping season: 2 – 3
Red River Delta (9 provinces) • Total cultivated areas: 20,000 ha • Averaged yield: 14 tons/ha • Advantages • Cropping season from Nov. – Jan. • Large production area • Lower costs of labour, land and irrigation • Disadvantages • One season production • Low yield potential • Lower quality (lower dry matter)
Red River Delta Low costs of labour and land and irrigation
Lam Dong Province Disadvantages - High costs of labor and land rental - High cost for irrigation during the dry season - High cost for pests and diseases control during the rainy season Advantages - Favorable climate conditions - Year round production - High yield potential and quality - High potential of Land expansion - Plastic houses
Sprinklers irrigation Harvested by machine
Potato production Main varieties # 07, PO3, Atlantic, TK96.1 Sonara, Diamant Current hybrid potential cultivars: TK10.6, TKC33
Problems Late blight Bacterial wilt Viruses Common scab Erwinia rot Fusarium rot and wilt
Potato Breeding Targets Late blight resistance Virus resistance Common scab resistance Processing quality (chipping) Colour potatoes Baby potatoes
TK96.1 Atlantic
Seed potato production in VietNam In vitro Plants Micro-tubers G0 (Green house) Domestic production is only about 30% G1, G2 (Field) Imports from China, South Korea ... For Farmers
II. Main Activities for the first year1) Evaluating Korean cultivars2) Hybriding promising clones3) Establising Aeroponic cultivation model4) Establising ultra-pure seed production protocol
III. SUGGESTIONS FOR THE PROJECT-Starting the project soon- Supporting the Korean cultivars for evaluation- Training diseases test techniques- Changing germplast for hybriding
IV. Project Impacts and Recommendations * Project impacts • Create promissing cultivars reducing potato seeds import from other countries • Stabilizing and growing the potato market • Supplying healthy mini-tubers to processing companies in Viet Nam. * Recommendations • Aeroponic cultivation is new for the PVFC Korean experts to the PVFC. • Financial management
V. Future Plan Next year activities are simialar to those in the first year. At the second year, it is expected to produce healthy mini-tubers to purchase to processing companies and growers at Da Lat.
