Introduction Transition period to digital publishing Uncertain economic environment This presentation attempts a detailed analysis of current scholarly publishing landscape in Greece Work & data based on Greek Directory of Digital Resources (pilot) + OA in Greece report (ongoing project, 2009 first edition – 2nd to come January 2011) PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
Scholarly Publishing in Greece (1): Publications PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
Scholarly Publishing in Greece (2): landscape • Mainly published in international journal titles • Publishing in Greek language and titles: • language limitations, audience & market size • until recently focus on social & political sciences, economy, literature, arts & culture • Now days it’s a bit more attractive for researchers to publish in Greek e-publications (can communicate their works to a wider audience) • The last 5 years : significant increase in e-publishing activity which followed up the fast development and success of Institutional Repositories • Books: Exclusively print format • At the end of 2009 only 3 publishers with initiatives on e-books were reported - On May 2010 this number raised to 16! PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
Scholarly Publishing in Greece (3): current journals Source: Scholarly Publishing & Open Access in Greece- 2009 Report, Georgiou, P. & Papadatou, F. http://nemertes.lis.upatras.gr/dspace/handle/123456789/2637- Updated 1/9/2011 PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
Scholarly Publishing in Greece (4): OA journals • 35 journals in DOAJ • (21 on April 2010 – 14 on March 2009) PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
Scholarly Publishing in Greece (5): Who’s publishing (OA)? PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin • Current major players in Digital publishing & OA: societies and academic institutions • Academic Institutions were pioneers in OA with IRs and Digital Collections • Private publishers e-publishing focus mainly in medicine and law - OA: It’s not an issue for them yet! • Main funding sources for OA : public funding and sponsoring • Secondary sources: membership and ads for societies • On the other hand subscriptions for Scholarly Journals is not a considerable income (maybe with the exception of some medicine and law titles)
E-publishing tools & services (1) OJS used in 27% of e-journals publications PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
E-publishing tools & services (2) 79 % of publications are indexing their content on article level and offer at least some basic search & retrieval services The rest 21% just provide issue lists (with links to the whole full text of the issue) Almost half of publications (45%) provide “full” search & retrieval services: browsing & searching articles According to known data less than 30% of publications use a standard metadata schema PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
The OJS case on Greece (1) • Used in 27% of e-journals cases • OJS cases represent • 27% of publications that provide “full” search & retrieval services: browsing & searching articles and • About 46% of publications that adopt a known metadata schema for article indexing • OJS publications “ethnography” • 11 by Societies • 4 using academic/libraries infrastructure • 5 using private publishers’ infrastructure • 4 by Research Institutions • 3 by Academic Institutions (all by Libraries) PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
The OJS case on Greece (2) Greek interface maintained by University of Patras, Library & Information Center (LIC) National Documentation Center (NDC) has made a lot of customization (reading tools etc) PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin

The University of Patras/LIC – OJS “special” case (1) • Project: digital collections of historical Greek literature journals (19th and beginnings of 20th century - 2004 • Need for a journal archiving system • Serve also as publishing system for future e-publishing purposes • OAI-PMH compliant • Need for easy indexing/cataloging procedure • Choose OJS for testing 2007 (…after some experimentation with custom applications) PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
The University of Patras/LIC – OJS “special” case (2) • OJS could fulfill our requirements but “…need for easy indexing/cataloging procedure…”? • Need for customization • Version 2.1.1.0 (!) • Implemented a “cataloging” web form • With appropriate changes in code • Skip editorial procedures • Modification of database • Creation pdf files from image files • We created a short of propriety “OJS-archiving system” • Unfortunately NOT a plug-in!! PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
The University of Patras/LIC – OJS “special” case (3) • Kosmopolis (2007) • 14 journals, about 50.000 items – Project completed in 2007 • http://xantho.lis.upatras.gr/kosmopolis/ • The first Greek collection to Europeana! PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
The University of Patras/LIC – OJS “special” case (4) • Pleias (2009) • 36 various 19th and early 20th century journals • Currently about 66.000 items • An on-going project – Archive keeps updated with new content on a project basis model through various collaborations with content holders • http://xantho.lis.upatras.gr/pleias/ PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
The University of Patras/LIC – OJS“special” case (5) • Daniilida • Old journals published in the area of Patras • Currently only 488 items • On-going project (further funding is needed!) • http://xantho.lis.upatras.gr/daniilida/ PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
The University of Patras/LIC – OJS “special” case (6) • Dexameni: a Greek Journals STORage system • A pilot project to implement JSTOR practice for Greek titles • http://xantho.lis.upatras.gr/dexameni/ • Currently two (philosophy) journals • Axiologika(1990-2002) and Deukalion (1970-1995) • Moving to Pasithee platform next year PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
Future developments/Trends(1) • OJS is used widely as well as other custom applications. More use, investment and development on OJS is expected in the short term • A lot of OA e-publishing projects by academic libraries have been approved by government for the next 3 years • It is expected that more than 40 journals published by Academic institutions and scientific societies will be published through OJS platforms run by libraries • A lot of customization and new tools are also expected to be developed, but it is uncertain what portion of this work would be disseminated to the community due to the implementation framework of these projects (e.g. tenders for private sector to provide OJS as a service to libraries !!!!) 5th UNICA Scholarly Communication Seminar, 7-9 November 2010, Lisbon
Future developments/Trends(2) • OJS customization needs: • Upatras-LIC is especially interested in • Authorities, e.g. author names for retrospective indexing • Fast article submission form e.g. for “editors”/catalogers for massive/easy import of articles, skipping all or selected editorial procedures if needed • Also annotation, commends & other web 2.0 features… • Examine potential ways for contribution through PKP European network PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
Conclusions (1) • E-publishing & OA have gained significant reputation and acceptance the last years in Greece • Main barriers to further improvement • Funding/Supporting Gold OA publications • Due to the crisis is seems quite unlikely to achieve some improvement on that! • Greek market size & language limitations • Current academic & research evaluation system and procedures (e.g. number of citations, publications to high impact factor journals • Lack of national and/or institutional OA policies • Need for more initiatives in digitization and indexing of back files, old journals etc 5th UNICA Scholarly Communication Seminar, 7-9 November 2010, Lisbon
Conclusions (2) • Need for more automation and standardization in e-publishing procedures • More work needed • on policies issues • on advocacy and lobbying for OA inside the scholar community and funding bodies • budget re-allocation towards OA (e.g. OA author fees) • to use crisis as an opportunity to promote OA • While at the same time we need to apply sustainable business models for OA journals • Academic libraries keep a key role in OA as well as in scholarly communication issues (and publishing!) in Greece PKP | International Scholarly Publishing Conference, 2011, 26-28 September 2011, Berlin
