Storage Media • Any device or material on which data can be electronically placed, kept and retrieved. • Examples: • Diskette or Floppy Disk • Hard Disk • Thumb Drive/Pen Drive • CD-ROM
Diskette or Floppy Disk • One of the oldest removable media solutions available for PC. • Ideal as a portable storage solution for small files. • Data is stored in a thin plastic disk. • Can be easily bent, scratched and cannot withstand heat.
Hard disk • Stores information on a platter. • Ideal as a portable storage solution for large files. • Vibration or shock can cause surface of the disk to be scratched.
Thumb Drive/Pen Drive • A portable USB flash memory device that can be used to quickly transfer audio, video, and data files from the hard drive of one computer to another. • Stores information in memory chips. • Keep away from static electricity and humid places (e.g. pockets).
CD-ROM • Stands for ‘Compact Disc Read Only Memory’. • Information stored inside cannot be changed. • Made up of a special plastics with a metallic coating. • Maximum storage capacity is 700MB • Commonly used to store text, audio and video information. • Usually 10-15 times slower than hard disk drives. • CD-Recordable drives allow you to store your own information on CDs. The Writeable CDs (CD-RW) are generally used to backup hard disks or distribute information.
