What is Rabies? • Rabies is a deadly viral infection that causes inflammation in the brain; the virus attacks the central nervous system. • Rabies is spread by infected saliva that enters the body through a bite or broken skin.
Cause of Rabies • The disease is transmitted from animals to humans, it’s most commonly caused by animal bites, there has even been some cases of humans becoming infected in bat caves after breathing in the air.
Who suffers from this disease? • Most rabies deaths occur in children. • Anyone who is bitten or scratched by a rabid animal
Signs/Symptoms • Anxiety • Stress • Tension • Drooling • Muscle spasms • Swallowing difficulty • Loss of muscle function
Can it be cured? • Rabies cannot be cured once the symptoms appear and almost always ends in death. • Three injections are needed the first two with an interval of one week and the last one three weeks later. • Over 55,000 people die from rabies worldwide yearly, 95% of them in Asia and Africa.
Other info… • Between 30% and 60% of them are children aged less than 15 years. • It is likely the total number of deaths in many parts of the world is much higher than official estimates.
