Why U2OSH and this Forum? • Show that a less-costly, lead-free aviation fuel exists today for a large percentage of sport aviators • Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1st autogas STC • Revisit how it all started • Review the current state of things • Look ahead to the future But first, a few words from two of the pioneers....

Paul Poberezny, Founder, EAA 7/6/12 TO: KENT MISEGADES FROM: PAUL POBEREZNY, EAA Dear Kent, Thanks so much for the information relative to the Unleaded to Oshkosh effort. It certainly brings back memories of long ago when my interest in moving automotive fuel ahead in the aviation world. I guess it goes way back to the earlier days of my flying experience when many of us used auto fuel in our airplanes (with success). I had a 1928 American Eagle with an OX-5 in it during high school and that was the airplane that I carried many five gallon cans of fuel from the filling station to fuel my aviation experience. Years ago, I talked with a good friend of mine (Harry Zeisloft, one of our early-day Directors) relative to pushing CAA (now FAA) approval to use auto fuel in various types of airplanes. We outfitted a homebuilt Cub that I built, which I still have, and we did a lot of testing on that airplane to disprove the common theory back then of vapor lock. The airplane was flown to 20,000 feet with auto fuel with no problem. That was around the time that we built the Spirit of St. Louis replica for our tour around the U.S. following Charles Lindbergh's tour in the earlier years. We used auto fuel most of the time on that with a trip through the mountains without any problems. I worked closely with FAA and the good friends that I made over the years and they were very supportive of our effort. I certainly applaud your efforts as well and those who will follow you. Harry Zeisloft and I talked about auto fuel and the ethanol situation and he had some good ideas relative to overcoming that problem. This was in the last few years before his passing. Harry was very instrumental in EAA's auto fuel program and he held many patents (one was the cruise control for autos). I also appreciate and recognize the contribution that Peterson Aviation gave to the program. Keep up the pioneering spirit and help keep aviation moving forward. Jack Cox , EAA Publications assisted Harry Zeisloft during autogas testing Harry Zeisloft, who had been a research engineer with General Motors for most of his career, conducted the program. He had to work with the FAA office in Chicago and they really put him through the wringer, requiring proof testing of everything. I remember one time when - with FAA personnel observing - we heated a big can of Mogas to a required temperature by dipping it into a 50 gallon drum filled with hot water, then quickly poured the gas into a big Stinson Jr. and climbed to a specified altitude (and temperature) to see if vapor lock would result. (It didn't.) Having been a part of the EAA program to get STCs for the use of Mogas, of course I know it can be safely used in the aircraft for which those STCs were obtained . . . and I know that myths still persist regarding its use. Every problem that occurs in engines that have been burning Mogas is blamed on the fuel - by people who have never been involved in any sort of testing. And, sadly, the coming of ethanol by politically influenced government fiat has just added to the confusion. Thanks for good memories, Jack
