  2. BIG Business • Big business is large-scale, corporate-controlled, financial or business activities. Use vertical & horizontal integration to buy to take over other business to become a BIG BUSINESS. • Robber Baron BIG BUSINESS owners: • John D. Rockefeller • Andrew Carnegie • Cornelius Vanderbilt • Sherman Antitrust Act (1890) • Law that made illegal to create a monopoly

Capitalism vs. Socialism • Capitalism: private businesses run most industries and competition determines the price of goods and profits for owners. • Socialism: government owns and operates most industries with profits being distributed among the society or workforce. Political and Social Problems • The Progressive Era was a period of social activism and political reform in the United States that flourished from the 1890’s to the 1920’s. • CAUSE: • The rise of the Industrial Revolution and BIG business combined with the arrival of immigrants. • GOAL: • Improve life for everyone in America as well as fix a corrupt government.

Women’s Suffrage Movement • Women's suffrage in the United States was achieved gradually, at state and local levels during the late 19th century and early 20th century, culminating in 1920 with the passage of the 19th Amendment. • "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.“ • 1st Women’s rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, NY • Led by: • National Women’s Suffrage Association (NWSA) • Susan B. Anthony & Elizabeth Cady Stanton • American Women’s Suffrage Association • Lucy Stone & Julia Ward Howell • Both groups eventually merges into the National American Woman Suffrage Association
