2. Do Now: Annotate the quote given in order to discover English motivations for settling the New World. • Highlight English motivations. • Underline why they chose the area of Virginia.

3. A quote from English writer Richard Hakluyt (circa 1588): • “There is under out noses the great and ample country of Virginia; the island whereof is found of late to be so sweet and wholesome a climate, so rich and abundant in silver mines, a better and richer country than Mexico itself. If it shall please the Almighty to stir up Her Majesty’s heart to continue with transporting one or two thousand of her people, she shall by God’s assistance, in short space, increase her dominions, enrich her coffers, and reduce many pagans to the faith of Christ.” • Highlight English motivations. • Underline why they chose the area of Virginia.

4. The Planting of English America • Spain took the lead in the 1500s in exploration. Settlements were primarily south of Mexico and in the Caribbean. • Context: Spain and England became religious rivals after England broke ties with the Roman Catholic Church in the 1530s which sparked the Protestant Reformation. Although the countries were at peace Catholic Spain and Protestant England continually sought to overthrow and out power the other. • Within 3 years of each Spain, England, and France all began to settle in North America. • Spain in Santa Fe (1610) • France in Quebec (1608) • England in Virginia (1607)

5. England’s first settlements • Roanoke Island: In 1585Sir Walter Raleigh landed at Roanoke Island, North Carolina. The settlement completely disappeared. • England’s defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 gave them the energy they needed to start their own colonial attempts in the New World. • Joint Stock Companies (similar to a modern corporation) formed which provided the financial means necessary to cross the Atlantic. • The Virginia Company (a joint stock company based in London) received a charter from King James I to settle In the New World. This charter allowed settlers the same rights of Englishmen in the New World that they had in the Old World. (Why is that significant?)

6. Jamestown, Virginia - 1607 -100 English settlers (all men) landed at Jamestown. -40 men died en route and dozens continued to perish once on shore. -The woods were full of game and the rivers full of fish, according to colonists, yet the settlers main cause of death was malnutrition.. WHY? Some blame the Natives for the savage attacks and unwillingness to trade while others blame the colonist for being too lazy to do the hard labor necessary in a new environment. What do you think?!

8. Captain John Smith • Saved the fledgling colony from complete collapse by instituting the rule “He who shall not work, shall not eat.” • Even still the colonists were forced to eat “dogges, Catts, Ratts, and Myce.”

9. Relationship with the Natives • Chieftain Powhatan ruled the Chesapeake area. (Because of this the English began to call their peoples the Powhatan’s). • Lord De La Warr arrived in 1610 with a relief party for the Jamestown settlement. He instituted military rule in over the colonists. He also had orders to declare war against the Natives in the area. This call for war by the English led to the First Anglo-Powhatan War in 1614. The Indians tried again in 1644 to rid their lands of the colonists in the Second Anglo-Powhatan War but they were defeated. • By 1669 a census showed that only 10% of the original Natives remained.

10. Final Thought • Jamestown survived because of the strength of its leaders. Assess the validity of this statement.

Your goal is to compare and contrast the French, Dutch, English, and Swedish early colonies. • Answer Unit 2 EQ 2 and turn in next class: What were the similarities and differences between the French, Dutch, English, and Swedish early settlements?

Next to the map write BRAINSTORM And then list similarities and differences you may see among these two settlements.

15. The Great English Migration The initial English migration to the New World led to two distinct settlements. #1- New England #2- Chesapeake Although each area was settled by English men- these areas turned into two very distinct societies. Your mission today is to figure out how and why.
