What is Culture? • Culture is defined as a people’s shared beliefs, values, practices, and traditions, or a way of thinking and acting. • “a way of life” • Culture can include language, knowledge and beliefs, laws and moral values, customs and traditions, art and music.
What is language? • Is a systematic way of relating meaning with the sounds made by the human voice. • Language can assign meaning to anything is existence or anything the human mind can consider…for example “Bootylicious” is a term now understood by many people and is even in the dictionary, but up until several years ago the combination of these sounds had no meaning. • A society or group must agree that certain sounds correspond to certain meanings in order for language to make sense and develop.
