First ideas An R&D station cluster for large area detectors in harsh environments T. Karg and R. Nahnhauer DESY and HAP
Large area detectors (Earth based): Scale: 100 km2 100 000 km2 Physics : ultra-high energy (> 1019eV) cosmic rays ultra-high energy (> 1017eV neutrinos ultra-high energy (> 1013eV) gamma rays Technologies: optical detection (scintillation, Cherenkov, fluorescense, .. .) radio detection ( in matter, in air) micro wave detection acoustic detection hybrid detection
R&D stations necessary for: • - sensor development and test - calibration development and tests • - general DAQ development and test • - trigger development and test • - data compactification and transfer • - power creation and/or distribution • - in-situ site testing and check of environmental conditions • (signal propagation, background noise, temperature (weather) requirements…)
R&D options communication R&D station power source reference detector (plastic scintillator)
Sensor R&D Zero’s approach: one station E: environmental parameters Si: air shower detectors S1 S2 10 m probe E power S3 DAQ Requirements: - easy transportable - temperature stable (-50 C - + 50C) - environmental protected
Array R&D Next step: one station cluster (cabled) 100 m X power DAQ Second next step: - self-sustaining power and DAQ
Components to start zero’s approach: Probe: different types of surface radio antennas E: buy commercial weather station Si: take available 1 m2 plastic scintillator modules with fiber read out and available PMT’s Power: take from site DAQ: need: four channels 100 MHz FADC 3 channels charge sensitive ADC (large dynamical range) 6 channel threshold trigger slow control sufficient data storage
Possible location and time scenario: Step 0: station setup and operation location - DESY in Zeuthen (station may be used later for education and outreach, see next slide) time - second half of 2012 Step 1: cluster setup and operation location - convenient site near to DESY in Zeuthen time - 2013 + first half of 2014 (later according to requirements) Step 2: ready for use in first field testing: > July 2014
Artistic integration of station in architecture of new lake building Interesting visual landmark of DESY for outside observer Easy to demonstratecosmic ray existence andfrequency of occurrence versus size (energy) Needs interactive steering possibility, easy to use by public
Profit from synergy within the Helmholtz Alliance for Astroparticle Physics • during design and construction • experience and components for hard and software (Aachen, Bonn, DESY, … ,KIT, …,Wuppertal, …. ) • during application • possible examples : radio/hybrid detector in Antarctica, Auger North, Tunka-Hiscore, …)
