OSKAR • * Outcome • * Scaling • * Know How • * Affirm and Action • * Review
Outcome • What does the coachee want to achieve, short / medium / long term – ‘future perfect’ • What does s/he want to achieve from the session • Holistic view of what the coachee and others around him / her want to see as a result of the coaching including signs of progress during coaching process
Scaling • Once the desired outcome is identified: • Question – with 10 being future perfect, where are you now on scale of 1 - 10? • Question – do you sometimes achieve figure higher up the scale? • Build on positives • Question – how will you know when you have achieved a higher number on the scale?
Know How • ‘Digging for gold’ – investing the time here. • Find out what resources are available to the coachee • Q’s such as: • How have you achieved current score? • What helps you be at this score rather than a 0? • What is working for you? • What would others say is working for you?
Affirm • Coach provides positive re-inforcement of what has been said • Reflect the positives • Improve coachees self-confidence • Build the relationship
Action • Actions based on the positives already identified • Support coachee to identify small steps they need to take • Reflecting back on current scale, what steps to increase number up the scale
Review • Review progress against actions • Takes place at the beginning of next session • Focus is on what is better, rather than focussing on the actions • Questions such as: • What is better now? • What effects have the changes had? • What do you think will change next?
Summary • Oskar is solution focussed • Helpful to pinpoint specifically level of change required. Some coachees may appreciate the focus of using a scaling technique • Review is the essential component, flow from previous session, monitoring of improvement
