Magnetic Reconnection • Occurs during loading phase of cycle (typically 40 minutes) • Magnetosphere tail becomes severely stretched • Magnetic field lines become aligned anti-parallel • Field cancels, energy conserved in several ways including injection of energetic particles • Plasmoid drifts off with solar wind
