  3. A taxicab company charges a fare of $4 for the first mile and $2 for each additional mile. Write and then evaluate an expression to find the fare for a 10-mile trip. • Words: $4 for the first mile AND $2 for each additional mile • Expression: 4+ 2 x 9 Use an expression to solve a problem

  4. A variable is a placeholder for any value • Babysitter earns $5 per hour. If h represents any number of hours, what expression would represent the amount of money earned? • An expression does not contain variables • 1+2, 3+8, 6+9, 7-9, 5-8, etc. • An algebraic expression DOES contain variables • 1 + X, 5 - y, 6 x Z, etc. Variable

The substitution property of equality is demonstrated when you replace a variable with a number • In other words: If two quantities are equal, then one quantity can be replaced with the other. • Symbols: For all numbers a and b, if a = b, then a may be replaced by b Substitution Property of Equality
