  1. GRA 5917 Public Opinion and Input PoliticsEconomic Development and Female Labor Force Participation Amanda Carlisle Nina Kjeldsberg

  2. Purpose To study the effects of economic development on the level of female work participation

  3. Theory • Pampel and Tanaka (1986) • There is a curvilinear relationship between economic development and female labor force participation (FLFP) FLFP Economic Development

  4. Other variables important to female labour force participation Family structure Female education Income Inequality The adult sex ratio Strength of the government Economic dependency Labor force growth No effect: divorce rate, government revenue Major implication of findings: reemphasize the importance of the structure of technology and work for the employment of women

  5. Model FLFP = β0 + β1(IndDev) + β2(EdOpp) + β3(CWR) + β4(IncIneq) + β5(StrSta) + β6(FDI) + β7(SR) + β8(ExpLF) β1 = Industrial development β2 = Educational opportunities for women β3 = Child/woman ratio β4 = Income inequality β5 = Strong state β6 = Dependence on FDI and trade β7 = Sex ratio β8 = Expansion of the labor force

  6. Reconsiderations Our Model: FLFP = β0 + β1(IndDev) Control for the same factors as Pampel and Tanaka Using a dummy variable for β5 (Strong State) Expand study from two time points to panel data Includes data that was hard to acquire in 1986 (ex. East European countries) Possibly using GNP to measure β1 (IndDev) instead of energy use per capita

  7. Data Sources World Databank World Values Survey ILO LABORSTA
