Martin Luther King’s “I had a Dream” Speech • On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King gave his famed “I had a dream” speech (That’s my Birthday!). • He spoke to over 200,000 people at the March on Washington from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. • His speech emphasized equality among people across the nation. • In the year after his speech, the civil rights movement achieved great success with the ratification of the 24th Amendment and the Civil rights Act of 1964. • In October of 1964, King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in attaining civil rights and equality in the US.
