P2-The Syllabus Says You Need To… DISTANCE, SPEED AND ACCELERATION Candidates should: (a) describe motion using speed, acceleration, velocity-time and distance-time graphs. (b) select and use the equations to calculate: distance, speed or time (c) Understand what is meant by the term ‘acceleration’ and be able to calculate it (d) Use velocity-time graphs to determine acceleration and distance travelled.
Objectives: By the end of the lesson you should:Understand what is meant by the ‘speed’Be able to calculate the speed of an objectRearrange the speed equation
Starter: THINK!When we talk about how fast an object is moving-what units do we use?How do speed cameras actually know if we are speeding or not? (Think about what it might measure)
What is speed? Speed is a measure of how far an object moves in a given time. This car is travelling at 60mph. This means the car travels 60 miles every hour. This jet is travelling at350m/s. This means the jet travels 350 metres every second.
Describing Motion: Definitions-Write these in the BACK of your book The Motion of an object can be described using the quantities below. Write a definition for each one. • Distance • Time • Speed • Distance-measured in meters (m). How FAR an object travels a from one point to another • Time-measured in seconds (s). How LONG an object takes to travel from one point to another • Speed-measured in meters per second (m/s). A measure of how fast or slow an object is moving. Or how far an object moves in a given time.
How is speed calculated? distance travelled time taken speed = The speed of an object can be calculated using this equation:
Using a formula triangle d s = x t A formula triangle helps you to rearrange a formula. The formula triangle for speed (s), distance (d) and time (t) is shown below. Cover the quantity that you are trying to work out, which gives the rearranged formula needed for the calculation. So to find speed (s), cover up s… …which gives the formula…
Calculating speed Question 1 distance time speed = = 1,500 100 • A train takes 100 seconds to travel 1,500 m. What is the speed of the train? • With ALL calculations you should follow the same method: • Write Equation • Rearrange if you need to • Check units-do you need to change them • Calculate = 15m/s
Calculating speed Question 2 distance time speed = A car travels at 25m/s for 3 minutes. How far does it travel? distance = speed x time = 25 x 180 = 4,500m = 4.5km
