observing with the head Assertions Assessments • Opinions or judgments of what is • being observed • Interpretations or assumptions • about what is being observed • Descriptive • Factual • Establishes what is true & false • Can be verified • Examples: • The room is 65’ x ‘98’. • It’s 68 degrees in the room. • Bubba is the CEO of AA Corp. • I am a woman. • The room is large. The room is spacious. • The room temperature is cold…warm… • just right. • Bubba is an inspirational leader. • I am stupid. I can’t do that. I will never • be able to…. • Belong to: • the thing being observed • the observer

observing with the heart • Find a partner – this is a paired exercise • Sit, facing each other: • Person A - face the back of the room • Person B face the front of the room • Person A = Speaker • Person B = Listener • Wait for further instructions
observing with the heart • Person A = Speaker – over the next 5 minutes please share an experience of courage • Person B = Listener – while the speaker is sharing their experience, look for the written word and embody the emotion. • Following the exercise, use the handout to capture your experience as the Speaker and your experience as the Listener.
