Using CALIPSO for Quantitative Validation of Cloud Detection

Using CALIPSO for Quantitative Validation of Cloud Detection. CALIPSO analysis was developed to verify globally all thresholds used in the NGST VIIRS cloud mask (VCM; w/Rich Frey, CIMSS). Analysis pointed to some flaws in the VCM and been provided to NGST (below left).

  1. Using CALIPSO for Quantitative Validation of Cloud Detection • CALIPSO analysis was developed to verify globally all thresholds used in the NGST VIIRS cloud mask (VCM; w/Rich Frey, CIMSS). • Analysis pointed to some flaws in the VCM and been provided to NGST (below left). • CALIPSO also provides the information needed to stratify cloud detection performance by cloud height and emissivity (opacity). • Image below right shows this stratification applied to the GOES-R AWG cloud mask (ACM) for one day of SEVIRI data. • Performance for very low cloud may be driven by spatial sampling differences. (A. Heidinger, M. Pavolonis, R. Frey)
