  2. Common Laboratory Equipment

  3. Beaker • Used to hold and heat liquids • Multiple purposes • Essential in the lab

  4. Erlenmeyer Flask • Used to heat and store liquids • Advantage: • The bottom is wider than the top • Heat quicker because of the greater surface area exposed to the heat

  5. Scoopula • Spatula-like scoop utensil • Uses • Primarily to transfer solids • Scraping product from a beaker or flask

  6. Graduated Cylinder • Used: • Accurately measure the volume of a liquid • Generally more accurate and precise than flasks and beakers • Due to smaller measuring increments

  7. Test Tube • Uses: • Hold, mix, or heat small quantities of solid or liquid chemicals • Test tube holder: • Used to hold test tubes when they are hot and untouchable. • The test tube rack: • Used to hold test tubes while reactions happen in them or for storage.

  8. Crucible • Used to heat small quantities to very high temperatures.

  9. Tongs • Used to hold many different items when they are hot • Examples: • Flasks • Crucibles • Evaporating dishes

  10. Ring Stand • Uses: • hold items being heated by bunsen burners or other items

  11. Clay Triangle • Used to hold crucibles when they are being heated • Usually sit on a ring stand

  12. Forceps • A handheld instrument • Used for grasping and holding small objects

  13. Wire Gauze • Uses: • Supports glassware during heating • Helps to spread the flame (and heat) out evenly over the container. • Used with: • iron ring • ring stand • bunsen burner

  14. Pipette • Used for moving small amounts of liquid from place to place • Usually made of plastic and are disposable

  15. Utility Clamp • Spring-loaded open-jaw clamp • Used to hold laboratory glassware

  16. Funnel • Used to channel liquid or fine-grained substances into containers with a small opening • Made of: • Stainless steel • Aluminum • Glass • Plastic

  17. Stir Rods • Used to stir things • Usually made of glass

  18. Watch Glass • Used to: • Hold solids when being weighed or transported • Should never be heated

  19. Evaporating Dish • Used to: • heat and evaporate liquids • evaporate and concentrate a solution • Appearance: • Porcelain • Shallow bowl with a spout • When heated: • Placed on a clay triangle for support.

  20. Burette • Used primarily for titration • To deliver one reactant until the precise end point of the reaction is reached

  21. Bunsen Burner • Used for heating, sterilization, and combustion • Bunsen Burner • Alcohol Burner

  22. The Classroom • Draw a picture of the classroom. • Label the: • Lab stations • Eye wash stations • Fire blanket • Exit • Fire extinguisher • First Aid Kit
