Major National Scholarships • Tri-Council (NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC),Trudeau, Vanier • $17,300 (NSERC PGSM) - $50,000/year (Vanier) • 2011/12 LFS received 4 new NSERC awards: • 1 CGSM, 1, PGSD, 2 CSGSD • Second round announcements for additional new NSERC awards expected in May-June 2011 (new for 2011) • LFS deadline usually mid-September • Important factors: GPA, letters of reference, publications • Faculty success rate is a major factor determining amount of 4YF funding received by LFS
Major National Scholarship Amounts • NSERC (Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships and Postgraduate Scholarships) • CGS M = $17,500/year for 1 year • PGS M = $17,300/year for 1 year • CGS D = $35,000/year for 2 or 3 years • PGS D = $21,000/year for 2 or 3 years • CIHR • CGS D = $35,000/year for up to 3 years • Trainee stipend: $30,000/annum; research allowance: $5,000/annum • Master’s level = $17,500/year for one year
Major National Scholarship Amounts (cont’d) • SSHRC • CGS Doctoral Scholarships: $35,000 per annum for 3 years • SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships: $20,000 per annum for 12, 24, 36 or 48 months • SSHRC Master’s Fellowship: $17,500, 1 year non-renewable • Vanier Scholarships • $50,000 per year for three years • Open to both Canadian, Permanent Resident, and International PhD students studying at Canadian universities • Trudeau Foundation Doctoral Scholarship • Up to 15 Trudeau Scholarships are awarded each year • $40,000 stipend plus $20,000 travelallowanceannually for up to 3 years • Canadian, Permanent Resident, International
Affiliated Fellowships Approximately 220 Affiliated Fellowships each year across campus Awards are made on the basis of academic excellence All students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply Fellowship values range from $300 to $27,500, but most are in the range of $16,000-$17,000 Applications and adjudication are part of the UBC portion of the Tri-Council competition Awards announced after Tri-Council results
Graduate Student Initiative (GSI) Awards • To be used for: • Entrance scholarships • Multi-year funding packages • Tuition awards • Scholarship top-ups • Available to all research Master’s and Doctoral students • 2011-12 total GSI funding from FoGS to LFS = $85,717 • Faculties and graduate programs are required by FoGS to establish and publish criteria by which their GSI funding will be distributed
Graduate Student Initiative Awards (cont’d) FoGS distributed GSI funds to faculties based on weighted graduate student FTE in the faculty Only a small amount of 2011-12 GSI funds have been allocated by LFS grad programs GSI available funding for 2012-13 expected to be announced February 2012
Four Year Doctoral Fellowship (4YF) Excellent recruitment scholarships $16,000 plus tuition for years 1-4 or 2-5 of a doctoral program All 3 4YFs have been awarded for 2011-12 and in each case were used to attract outstanding new doctoral students to LFS 4YF allocations for 2012-13 expected to be announced in February 2012
International Partial Tuition Fee Scholarship International Partial Tuition Fee Scholarships assist international graduate students with their tuition fees if they are registered full-time in research-oriented master’s and doctoral programs Up to $3,200/year (new 2011) Students receiving external funding for tuition from home government or funding agencies are not eligible Application not required
LFS Departmental Awards & Prizes Largely endowed scholarships established by LFS Award amounts are available in February for upcoming Winter Session of that year A list of available awards including amounts are sent to graduate programs’ Grad Advisors by LFS
LFS Departmental Awards & Prizes (cont’d) • $10,000/year or greater (major awards) • 9 awards, total value = ~$125,000 (~$200,000) • LFS recommendations to FoGSbased on nominations by LFS Grad Scholarship Committee • Less than $10,000/year (minor awards) • 33 awards & prizes, total value = ~$25,000 • Range from ~$350/year to ~$2,500/year • LFS recommendations to F0GS based on nominations by the relevant grad programs
Graduate Student Travel Support • Graduate Student Travel Fund (Faculty of Graduate Studies) • To assist students presenting their thesis/dissertation research at major research conferences • Maximum of $400 per graduate student per degree program • Apply any time • Some scholarship programs provide graduate student travel support
Graduate Student Travel Support (cont’d) • LFS • Five small separate endowments and various other sources • To assist students presenting their thesis/dissertation research at major research conferences • Normally one per student per graduate degree program • Up to $400 for MSc and $600 for PhD • Requires application for FoGS Graduate Student Travel Fund • Expect supervisor to contribute • Apply any time (new for 2011-12)
Miscellaneous Research-Specific External Awards Awards offered by various agencies normally awarded to students working in specific research areas NSERC Industrial Postgraduate Scholarships (IPS)
